Installed a k&n filter today and did some wheeling last week! Sounds much deeper and throaty, love it. Also bought some new pods which I put underneath my winch plate (took them off the roof rack because I hated the look) and am debating on deleting the fog lights holes because I removed the pods in there.
Also would like to try and build my own bumper similar to Recons hmmwv bumper, so I can still use my brush guard/winch plate.
Finally, went to touch up my herculiner and saw it had dried out. The great customer service is sending me a new kit since the can was defective and would not close properly!

Tire carrier and license plate is all done...tomorrow should arrive the back up camera...but anywyas Rhino spare tire carrier for H1 is almost a perfect match for the H3.

I found it. There are a bunch of noises that the h3 tailgate can make. Either its the car jack, misalignment or the hydraulic mechanism itself.
My 3's clunking noise drove me crazy for months.
It was the vent, which I still don't fully understand the purpose of, two of the plastic bits that keep it in place were broken.

Altico took care of it. While I had the glue tube in the truck, also glued the rear seat cargo nets in place.

My custom led bar shakes as well, that noise is next and I can finally drive in peace.

The vent is to relieve the spike of cabin pressure that occurs when you shut a door. New vehicles are so tight, that they must have some sort of relief opening so the doors will shut without slamming.

New Mustangs don't have a cabin vent, so they will automatically drop the drivers-side window 1" when you open the door...and the window will close fully after you shut it. So they are accomplishing the same thing with the BCM and electronics, rather than the Hummer's old-school cabin vent. Back in the late 80s, there was a rash of rather public complaints about the Corvette & the IROC Camaros...seems if you slammed the doors or the hatch, with the windows rolled up...the very large and costly rear hatch glass could shatter! I think this was about the time that cabin pressure vents started appearing on production cars.

On the H3...notice the vent flaps work in only one direction? This acts like a check valve that lets air out...but, not air (or water) in. I have submerged my H3 above the vent, and I did not notice any leakage in the rear door. Works great now but, I imagine 20 years from now it will simply be an open passage thru the cabin. I'm curious if the guys that have blanked off this vent (cake pans, and other goofy ideas) have any issues with door closure, or ears popping when someone slams a door.

really like most things about the Rhino. If you have to get into the rear cargo area of the truck much they are a PITA though.

That is actually a really great question because I have thought about the vent block off from Gobi and put the tire up top. I would think though the H3 has a lot of leaking air spots. My truck feels like an old Ford pickup truck falling apart most days lol. Only thing missing is the massive rust.

I didn't thought of that...however here in socal windows are usually left slightly cracked specially in summer months specially for leather vehicle in order not to have a sauna, I'll have to check how the doors close now with everything sealed shut...cause that rear hole is shut tight I made a plastic gasket around it in order to prevent water from entering. And if anything I might just break such gasket seal from the bottom part and maybe a little from the sides in order to allow the air out when shutting the doors.

I've had one question about your truck ever since you started working on it. How in the world do you keep from ripping the antenna off the side when you wheel? I'd probably have it caught on something and ripped off within 50 feet of the trail entrance.

Maybe modify the hook it sits in to instead be a flat plate that extends out a little further (and probably a slight bend downward at the end to act as a ramp), and weld a section of round tube vertically to the arm and use a lynch pin placed into the tube and then into a matching hole in the plate to lock it in place. That way it stays closed when driving around, but you can just pull the lynch pin to swing it out without having to lift it up first.

This makes total sense. I don't think Wranglers have that vent. When you shut one door while the other is open, it does so easily. If not, you feel pressure, & its harder to shut, often have to double down with more force

Almost every vehicle has that vent in one form or another. Some exit on the C or D pillar. Some exit behind the bumper. Somewhere that air has to push out. Auto makers go to good lengths to hide those ugly vents. Of course the Wrangler could be so poorly sealed that it doesn't need the vent :giggle:

Nevermind, a quick Google search showed they have a similar tailgate vent.

So true. Back in the 80s, I had a buddy with an 82 CJ. It was so "ventilated" that he drove around all winter with a wool Army surplus blanket and the heater on full blast!
It leaked rainwater like hell too. This combination often resulted in small skating rinks forming on the floorboards. First thing in the morning, he could lift out the slabs of ice and start the truck.
Remember...this was a 1982 vehicle in 1984!!! It was not an old beat-up Jeep. At the time it maybe had 30k miles on it. Even brand new, CJs were very crude vehicles, (tractors with turn signals).

We don't have that many woods with big trees in the trails or anywhere overall in socal...only place I can think of i'd have to remove them or shorten them would be big Bear. However the mounts and antenna are pretty flexible, the big spring allows for full 90° bending, as well the mounting bracket is flexible and tough enough to absorb some pretty good impacts I added a 2 inch washer with the bolt in the inside to help reinforce the body panel...my wife have banged them pretty good when I first installed them while driving in town because she forgot about them and went in the drive thrus, or at the gas station. As well we have hit some of the trees alone the sidewalk that their branches hang too low and stick out too much at 35-40 MPH and they haven't been ripped off...just the usual waggle lol.

Now i have and witness really torture to these antennas and mounts with the hmmvw's, specially lmtv's and mrap's since they are so massively tall...and they held up pretty good then too...the thing that tends to come off is the little rubber tip, but those are easy replaceable.

That's cool. Sounds like totally different types of trails here vs. there.

The vent is also to allow air to escape when your HVAC system is set for Fresh instead of Recirculate. Bringing in outside air requires an exhaust for inside air, and is actually required by Federal law if I'm not mistaken. Many vehicles have it hidden behind one corner of the rear bumper facia. My wife's '06 Tahoe has it behind the exterior cover of the upper D pillar.

installed some led lighting for the map, courtesy lights, and red led for the temp controls. Does anyone know how to get to the light on the rear wiper knob? Also, are the arm rests the same bulb?

I ripped the door handle off my rear driver side door because I thought it was just slightly frozen in place, but it turned out that the rest of the doors didn't unlock when I used my keyfob. Irritatingly, this happens more often than it should. I think you have to give it a couple seconds between button pushes for it to register unlocking the passenger doors. POS.

Though I think part of the problem is more than once my daughters have nearly put all their weight onto the handle while pulling down, since they are too short to pull it out the right way when trying to open the doors.

Made up some custom little brackets to mimic the mounts for the stock headlight units, and installed these new LED lights

I should've done a small writeup and build thread on how I did it, but I was too caught-up trying to get them in and working before today :emb:

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everybody!
