transmission rebuild

GAHHH!!! So I kept pulling a P1815 and ordered the necessary part for the hummer. Transmission switch? Zach can confirm that as I got it from him. Anyways I change it out, nothing technical it was a super easy install for the trans. I pulled the code 3 times since I put it in yesterday. The trans before that would be fine sometimes sluggish and sometimes it would pop out of 4th on the freeway and downshift to 3rd when it didnt need to.

I wanna go wheeling this weekend. Do I drop it off at the dealership have them look it and have it by saturday or wait and go to inglewood transmissions? I plan to get it fixed sooner then later but would much rather have it for this weekend. How bad would it be drive 100-200 miles on the freeway? sometimes it will pop out of 4th other times it will be just fine. I dont wanna cause more damage and as along as I have 1st gear for wheeling Im happy. I dont want it to pop out into 2nd. Any info? Im sure MaxPF has the answer!

Drive it to Inglewood trans in 3rd. Don't wheel it, unless you want to risk buying a trans rebuild. There is a potential temporary dix, but I am hesitant to suggest it since it requires dropping the pan and it will make the trans shift really hard.

I already drove about 40 miles since I put in the new switch, it required to drop the pan so the trans isnt as foreign as it once was but I am still a noob in the transmission world. On the freeway today it didnt drop into 3rd unnecessarily. I am not sure if other factors play into that, idk maybe ATF amount (had no leaks but throwing out all factors) or temp or some other factor. I am not sure if the new switch cured it or another factor did or possibly it just hasnt done the random downshift yet. I am not sure...

OK, well, when you are lying under the trans looking up at the valve body, the pressure control solenoid is at the right center-rear of the valve body, next to where the harness comes through the case. In the back of that solenoid is an allen screw that adjusts the base pressure. You may need to remove the auxiliary valve body to get to it, depending on what you have for Allen wrenches. Anyway, turning it clockwise increases overall pressure. By bumping the pressure up it will usually compensate for an internal leak and prevent the trans from dropping out of OD. This is just a band-aid; it doesn't actually fix the root problem. It will also increase shift firmness, depending on how much you increase the pressure it can range from annoying to obnoxious to I-hope-it-doesn't-break-something! Start with 1/8th of a turn, and if that isn't enough try another 1/8th. I wouldn't go over 1/4 turn total. There is no guarantee this will help anything, but it shouldn't hurt anything either as long as you don't get carried away and go for the drag car shift firmness effect.

Max,
This was a helpful discussion. It looks like I'm in for more work now. I finally pulled the 350 (190K) from my K1500 EC yesterday evening. I have 235K on the 700R4 and it slipped and shifted firm to hard as you described. I'd be gambling to leave it behind a fresher engine transplant. There is a trans shop in Covina/ San Dimas area that my friend recommends highly and he's an "artiste" when it comes to "car stuff". I'd stay away from Inglewood personally just because it's so close to the areas of LA that have horrible traffic. I would venture to say that Inglewood is probably 50-60 miles from Santa Clarita as a guess....

A-ha! I guess I missed something in the translation. Fullerton is just over the hill from my home in the Heights. I'll look them up...just because...
