transmission rebuild

My transmission is starting to slip. So I am going to pull it and rebuild it. Any suggestions on how it can be beefed up.

How many miles do you have on it? What is it doing? Above 80k 4L60E's tend to have worn out the spool bores in the valve body and cause slippage and hard shifts. If that's the case it's likely that your trans could be fixed with a remanned VB.

Greg, guess we'll have to have you go through my transmission soon for some preventative maintenance :)

I dropped the tranny this weekend and found the 2-4 bands had overheated and were burned pretty bad. Also found lots of shavings so I am going to pick up a rebuild kit today . Hope to have it back togather mid week

I had mine done with the Raptor kit from PATC and the upgraded Beast sunshell.

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4l60e.htm

Here were the comments from my trans guy:

Fluid is dark, zero metal. As I expected the forward and 1-2 accumulator pistons are plastic. There is some discoloration of the 3-4 clutch and the band, everything else looks pretty good. I ordered a 9 clutch 3-4 kit, paper/rubber kit, molded pistons, transgo kit, wide red eagle 2-4 band, beast reaction shell, filter, duralife pump bushing, and the aluminum accum pistons.

I was watching one of those how its made shows and they were showing how transmissions were built. Its pretty interesting, but no wonder they always have problems, the gear selector is a flimsy metal piece i could probably bend with my hands!!

I went with monster in the box kit because the could get me the parts quicker and so far I have a little over a grand in parts after shipping and synthetic fluids to go back in.

I am at 87k right now...I havent replaced any mechanical parts yet just electrical so I am sure a rebuild will be in my future. How tough would it be to rebuild one if its your first time? If its super tough I have a buddy who I can get some guidance from as he has done some before.

Also, how tough would it be to replace some of the parts with this stuff? I like to upgrade while replacing older stuff...

EDIT: seems like bebe used a good amount of the stuff brodie used.

Speaking in $, how much is a rebuild? My trans is slipping and I'm at 93k...

At 93k I would suspect the VB before thinking the trans needs a complete rebuild. 4L60E's are known for the spools wearing out the bores in the VB, causing slippage, flares, and eventually hard shifting as the PCM maxes out the line pressure to compensate.

Are you talking about the external selector lever? It ain't as flimsy as you think.

Good luck. My experience with MIAB doing Todds 4L80E was horrible. We had to contact them TWICE because they left parts out of the kit and sent us the wrong parts. In the end, we never did get the proper steels or intermediate and OD Alto clutches, and the forward and direct Altos they sent us were the thin ones rather than standard thickness (thin are good for holding power because you can fit more in a pack, but they don't handle shift energy heat as well because of the thin steels). We ended up running Borg Warner High Energys, which is just as well in a street/towing trans.

The 4L60E really isn't a trans to pop your cherry on. You need some special tools, and a bit of experience to determine when hard parts need to be replaced. Most 4l60's need planetaries replaced FWIW.

Once you're doing the rebuild it's no extra difficulty to do most typical mods. Again, experience is helpful to know what you might need. For instance, stores like PATC will gladly sell you the wide upgraded 2-4 band. Someone who doesn't have experience will throw it in and wonder why it fails with burned edges after several thousand miles. The reason is because the original narrow band has worn a shallow trough in the reverse input drum. So, when installing a wide band on a trans that was running a narrow band, a new drum is always needed. Little things like that can bite the first time builder unless they do a LOT of research and/or have someone knowledgeable overseeing the project.

I am finally finished and its all back togather . For me it was a lot of work a lot more than I expected. Mabye I got lucky but I was very pleased with MIAB . The product was all there and delivered to me when they said it would be. Hope I dont need to do another for a long time. I will be adding a external trans cooler next to try to keep the temps down.

I was mistaken saying I was 87k miles I am actually 300 miles short of 90k miles right now and seeing my PCM wasnt tuned with the 35s I used an online tire calculator and realized after 36k miles of driving with 35s I have an extra 3k miles unlogged so I am really at 93k miles. Anyways, at 93k miles I could start to feel it slip, its infrequent right now but I would say I could feel it happen on initial take off. While I think a rebuild isnt a mandatory thing right now I feel I should start saving up and getting ready to have it rebuilt by someone sooner rather then later. I really would rather learn how to rebuild a tranny but I will take MaxPFs word for it as this trans isnt a good one to learn off of...Not sure if I should find a tranny shop or use the dealer but either way while I am at it I want to add a trans cooler and some mods off of brodies trans we was going to sell.

Any specific sites you recommend that will offer these parts for the rebuild/upgrade?

The main appeal to the trans brodie was offering was less wheelspin and less stress on other parts seeing it reacts quicker. He isnt in the US for about a year so buying one directly from him isnt gonna work...

Is Santa Clarita anywhere near Inglewood? Again, I want to seriously suggest you have a reputable shop check it out. As I said earlier, valve body wear is not an uncommon problem at your mileage, and it causes the symptoms you are mentioning. It is much cheaper to replace the VB than to rebuild the entire trans, and you can often get another 20-50k miles out of the trans.

Inglewood is near LAX airport. Santa Clarita is up north by Magic Mountain.

OK, I avoid Cali like the plague, so telling me Inglewood is near LAX and Santa Clarita is by Magic Mountain doesn't tell me squat :p I'm guessing they are both in the LA metro area? I was going to suggest that 06 H3 call Mike L at Inglewood Transmission and see if he is willing to look at it.

EDIT: Inglewood trans is in Fullerton, despite it's name. Who knew? Phone # is 714-870-7300. Ask for Mike. Don't mention my name!!! :deal:

Don't blame you. :D Inglewood is in the metro area. Santa Clarita is way out of town on the way to San Francisco. Inglewood and Fullerton are two very different places. I guess he started in Inglewood and then moved his shop to Fullerton but kept the name to preserve his rep. Fullerton is where Off Road Evolution is. That's south east of the metro area.

Tell him the symptoms and let him figure it out. It could be one of several things, but there's no way to tell without checking it out in person.

He has no patience for bull****ters, morons who try to act like they know ****, etc. He knows his stuff, and freely helps out people, even if they buy their stuff elsewhere. He does mostly diesel transmissions these days, but I'm sure he will help you out. Give him a call first and see what he says.

I am not worried one bit...what can I say, I am close to 100k miles and she can easily go another 100k if I keep up on maintenance. This guy is highly recommended, I am sure he can fix it and even if the prices are a little bit more then average im sure it will come out good. My neighbor had tranny work done last year and has had nothing but issues, I dont wanna **** with a trans.

GAHHH!!! So I kept pulling a P1815 and ordered the necessary part for the hummer. Transmission switch? Zach can confirm that as I got it from him. Anyways I change it out, nothing technical it was a super easy install for the trans. I pulled the code 3 times since I put it in yesterday. The trans before that would be fine sometimes sluggish and sometimes it would pop out of 4th on the freeway and downshift to 3rd when it didnt need to.

I wanna go wheeling this weekend. Do I drop it off at the dealership have them look it and have it by saturday or wait and go to inglewood transmissions? I plan to get it fixed sooner then later but would much rather have it for this weekend. How bad would it be drive 100-200 miles on the freeway? sometimes it will pop out of 4th other times it will be just fine. I dont wanna cause more damage and as along as I have 1st gear for wheeling Im happy. I dont want it to pop out into 2nd. Any info? Im sure MaxPF has the answer!
