Today I was testing my new efan setup (My truck could not get cooled ever since the engine swap and its been 5 months already)

Anyway,

Hood open, the truck would idle at 210* with 115* ambient

Hood closed, the truck idles at 230* with 115* ambient

Im running 2 primary fans and 1 aux. One of the primary fans wasnt working at all (poor wiring connection) so Im optimistic on solving my cooling problem and getting better results tomorrow.

Anyway, hood open dropped the coolant temp by 20 degrees in my case, so Im sure hood louvers do a good job for people with idle issues!

Have you looked at the flex-a-lite black magic 180?

I have. The cfm rating for the fan is very optimistic when you compare to its amp draw (18 amps). The ones Im using pull 30 amps and rated 1900 cfm only (and they blow thro 30 amp fuses easily).

Anyway, I did alot of testing today with hood open & closed. My readings where directly from the pcm.

@116* ambient today, idled for 2 hours

Hood open: Idle ECT @ 190*
Hood closed: Idle ECT @ 202*

(12* difference)

But once I got a/c on

Hood open: Idle ECT @ 217*
Hood closed: Idle ECT @ 220*

(3* difference - not worth the trouble)

The GM idiot gauge is exactly in the middle when ECT is 230*

(for my 09 Alpha)

I did a test by driving the truck without the front grille. Zero effect on cooling.

Turbulent air has more energy in it for cooling vs smooth air. It sounds counterproductive but the grill doesn't block enough airflow to make any difference in cooling.

I'd postulate that a hood induction system similar to older 70's trans ams would help. Air would be forced in the top and across the engine and follow draft out the bottom. At idle it would allow heat to rise out the hood.

That is my opinion as well, air in the top and ducted out the bottom with the rest of the radiator air.
