Yes, seems to have more go. But you know how that saying goes. Any mod we do has benefits. But my scan guage says 2 miles/gal more. I have 140,000 miles and I have kept track and logged every fillup. I have logged every mile/gal change. I was getting 15 m/g and after 2 tanks getting 17 m/g.

There are no California legal aftermarket headers available due to the law:

For the sales or installation of a California Aftermarket Catalytic Converter, the following are legal requirements:

(1) The vehicle must be specifically included in the vehicle application list that is maintained by the California Air Resource Board

(2) The vehicle must be more than 7 years old or have more than 70,000 miles on its odometer

(3) The vehicle must be beyond the coverage of the OEM catalyst warranty period. This period can vary from 7 years or 70,000 miles to as high as 15 years or 150,000 miles. Installers may reference the vehicle owner’s manual or warranty booklet, or they may contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealership to verify the applicable OEM California catalytic converter warranty

(4) The vehicle must have a legitimate need for replacement of the existing catalytic converter. If an installer is making your repair, this must be documented on the repair ticket. Also if the OEM catalytic converter is present, the installer must make a determination that it is not functioning properly before replacing it

(5) The aftermarket California catalytic converter must be installed in the same location as the OEM California catalytic converter it is designed to replace. The front face of the replacement California catalytic converter shall be no more than 3 inches further upstream or downstream in the exhaust from where the front face of the OEM California catalytic converter was located. The installation may not alter the location, position, or orientation of oxygen (O2) sensors upstream and downstream of the California catalytic converter

(6) The aftermarket California catalytic converter must be installed on a one-for one catalytic converter basis;

(7) The aftermarket California catalytic converter must be installed with all other required catalytic converters (meaning you cannot consolidate the catalytic converters, nor can you add additional catalytic converters)

(8) If an installer completes your repair, a warranty card must be filled out by your installer, signed by you (the customer), attached to the repair ticket, and a copy must be returned to the catalytic converter manufacturer.

(9) If an installer completes your repair, they must keep documentation regarding the installation of the new aftermarket California catalytic converters including all of the above information. This documentation shall be made available to the California ARB or its representative as provided for in title 13, section 2222(b)(8). All such records shall be maintained for 4 years from the date of sale or installation of the California catalytic converter.

Yup, no CARB approved catalytics from Magnaflow or Walker :(

What does California expect you to replace a bad cat with?

Might want to move to the USA instead of Kalifornia

How do they catch you with aftermarket cats? If you get one then install it during smog they don't go under to look for an oem cat IIRC...

I'm just confused how they enforce it

They do a visual inspection. Just throw the heat shield back on for smog and play dumb. They will never know its not stock when its covered up

That's what I would try to do. I'm wondering if the Magnaflow is detectable sound-wise vs. the stock manifold (?). Maybe Alex can help us import 49-state Magnaflow cats to us Cal Hummer owners under-the-table, so to speak...;^)

In California, the only way we can modify our exhaust systems is do it ourselves since CARB has such a tight clamp on the shops. Even then, we have to fear the smog police when we do our own wrenching....

I'm digging the tunnel now.

I am thinking of doing something like that. I have family in NY who can ship me stuff...

This CA crap is ridiculous.

When I lived in CA you could buy parts that werent CARB legal since they would just consider it off road use only. Did something change recently?

So after putting my new header on (magna flow) i found that i hear a new noise during idle not warmed up and sometimes during acceleration. It not the tone of the exhaust im talking about. Its a much quieter version of how it sounded when it was basically header only exhaust after my cat fell apart. BTW the exhaust sound/tone has zero sound difference over stock. i also dont have a muffler. I would assume only alsakadan would know what im talking about. I also read to do not put locktite on header bolts but i can always go back and do so. and i do not have a torque wrench so i tightened them to about what there were when i took them off, which was not hard to get them loose. should i take it to a shop to just crank them all to 15lbs for safety?

Use anti-sieze on the bolts since you are putting steel bolts in aluminum. Loctite, and they will NEVER come out again.

You may be hearing the exhaust pulsing the thinner wall tubes of the magnaflow. The stock header is cast iron and has thicker walls thus much quieter.

If you look at the internet auto parts stores, they will not ship catalytics to California.

Thats what I thought about the noise but my buddies didnt agree with me! glad someone else had the same idea. and your saying with or without loctite the bolts could seize.

also unless u fab up new mounts for the heat shield the magnaflow header does not allow the heat shield to be mounted.

I think you would have to be creative and have a stud clamped to the header tube in some way to secure the heat shield. "Maybe" it would be overlooked if you're a gambler like me....
