this is very true.

I remember back in 2004 Mike was the only person able to tell that the firewall was cracked on my dad's 2001 Wagon after the rollover. and Mike said, the only way to get a new firewall is to get a new body.

the issue my dad seems to be running into is the insurance is already leaning at totalling it (without seeing it) because they don't want to ship it to Tustin from Pismo.

Even if insurance calls it "totalled" they can pay what they claim to be the value adjusted by whatever wacky percentage they use to give you a cash buyout on it. We did that with one of our cars that had right fender, hood and grill damage; we were able to take the insurance companies top offer for the totalled car and have it fixed gooder than new.

except my Dad pays extra to have his truck insured for the value he sets. So if they total my Dad's truck, he is guaranteed a certain amount. and then he has the option to buy back the truck at whatever they set the value at. or take the money and look for another truck.

here's a quote from a fellow H1 owner who lives like 10 miles from my dad. this H1 owner does a lot of work with the park ranger's H1 and the Hummer Tours in Pismo so he knows a good amount about the H1.

Have not been able to track down the Ranger that was doing the chase but as it is told he was doing 40-60 mph on the beach in a 15 zone.
He launched it off of a creek bank and was going fast enough that it landed on the right rear tire. The rear tire went all the way to the top of the fender.
So he was going fat enough that the front end stayed up in the air and landed it at that right angle.
Hell of a hit she took and plenty of visible damage and quite sure of the hidden issues to be found when tearing into her.
I'd shoot for a total and a buy back!

so if they total the truck, my Dad will probably buy it back, and send it to Mike S for him to work on at Tustin. What's nice is Tustin is only about an hour away from me (6 for my dad) so I can go and check on it when it's there.

might be worth a AAA flatbed to Tustin even if it's out of pocket. Probably tweaked the framerails and really messed up the crossmembers. Maybe the fact that it didn't nose-dive will lessen the damage? Who knows?

If it comes down to towing out of pocket my dad and I both have AAA Premier. So worst case is he has it towed to somewhere in LA(one free 200 mile tow) and then I get it towed from there to Tustin. And I just realized I put 6 hours away is my dad. He's only about 4 away.As far as frame damage. I think there would be more since it only landed on one wheel/tire instead of both. So the force got distibuted in about half the area it could have. And maybe now my dad can get 12K frame rails and those goodies

I think it might have suffered more damage from landing on one rear wheel than both front wheels. all the force on one wheel versus both fronts. I dont think we'll truly know until Mike gets a chance to look at it.
and I've got a 88 crewcab longbed truck that I could tow my dad's truck with if it needs be.

Sincerely hope the guy get caught, and that closer inspection doesn't reveal any severe damage... To the truck that is, I hope the guy that stole it ends up with as much severe damage as possible.

thanks, and here's an update

UPDATE: Finally got Allstate to release the vehicle to the Tow company and tomorrow morning first thing she will be on her way to the hands of the Master ... the Hummer God (Mike).

I will rest much better once it is in his hands because we all know he is one of the best, I usually do most of the work on the truck myself primarily so that if something breaks on the trail I will at least have a chance of getting my sorry behind out ... because lets face it ... if a tow truck can get where we off road we really don't need an H1!

My expectation is it will need quite a bit of suspension work, Damon said that the Right Rear just about everything will need to be gone through if not replaced. I was looking at the pictures and it looks like the upper A-arm hit the body right where the ball joint is. Now that is a lot of movement!

The fuel tank might have water in it because some say that it landed in a few feet of water and with the fuel filler tube being knocked down below the hub there is a good chance of a breach.

As of 530pm they still haven't caught the tweeker.

So it will be interesting to see what Mike thinks.

Another update. The truck got to Mike S @ Tustin earlier today. And went straight to checking it out. Said there is no frame damage! That's a huge relief!

I swapped H1s there early this morning and looked for it but it wasn't there yet. Hope the rest of the report is just as good.
