People don't understand the importance of R&D... Taking the great frame of the colorado, and developing it is far more assuring, and arguably less problematic than creating one from scratch.

As far as Wranglers go, I absolutely love them. But the only thing H3 and Wrangler drivers have in common is that they both enjoy offroading. After that we're really looking at two completely different types of trucks. I enjoy dashing through sand dunes at 90mph without sustaining permanent damage to my back, and I'd like to do that without having to buy a Raptor. That said, i'm also planning to get a cheap YJ, fix it up for a different experience offroad.

Thanks, A lot of great replies. My few Jeep friends are cool. They like it. Want to know when I will take it off road. Soon. I have not had a nice vehicle in years. My TJ just got floor pans welded in and I have to go get that, I am selling it. I owe 4 K on my Harley so. I'm gonna dump the Jeep to drop a payment. I'm glad I keep coming back here. I called the dealer yesterday to see if the JKU Was still there. It was gone. But remembering the test drive. This is why the H3 is in my driveway. That and the wife liked the H3 better and her car was the donor vehicle for the down payment. She does like the Cherokee better than her other car so I don't feel too bad. lol

if anyone gives you a hard time about the weak front differential, just say "dana 35" and walk off. every off road vehicle has its weaknesses. some are worse than others. really, we should all be united by the fact that we're all into off roading, but some people are more into the "cult" of [insert brand here]. it's silly, but the more grown up people don't do it.

Lol I get those occasional "smart remarks" from jeepers but 99% of the time I'm breaking their necks. They always turn back and can't help but stare.

Must be the Georgians, since where I (currently) live, the jeepers don't turn back. The Jeep is as, if not more, off-road capable than the H3. However, I will agree with some, that the H3 is a lot more comfortable ride.

Yeah here in Georgia every h3 you see is bone stock with a soccer mom driving it, so it's really rare to see one that's modify. The jeepers can't help but stare

That only applies to 99% of the Wranglers.

The area I live in (johns creek, GA) is kinda a upper middle class so every jk here is modded, but they only use them for mall crawling... Not a speck of dirt on it.

The JKU can't turn as tightly as an H3 from what I've seen out on the trail. Where I can simply turn tight and make it a JKU has to stop, backup, turn, backup one more time, and then finally make the turn...

The Dana 30/35 in stock form is a joke. The 30 can be made to handle 33's, but anything past that is asking for trouble. The 35 can be modified, as well, but it's not worth it vs just going with a 44. The newer JK/JKU's all suffer from poor welds on their axles and trackbar mounts just ripping off. Had several friends with lightly modified D/D's have them fail and one almost lost it going 75MPH in traffic. The Dana 44's are much better Axles on a Jeep, but only up to 35's. After that the same stuff applies to the D44 as the 30/35.

The front diff on our H3's might be a weak link, but with the Adventure stock tire size you're already to the point of where a stock D30/35 would start having issues as well with larger tires (stock for that setup is normally 30x9.5R15's).

I would say a 97-06 TJ/LJ modified would of coarse blow the doors off of an H3 off road, but at the end of the day you'd want to be in the H3 no doubt on the way home. The TJ/LJ is okay, but on long drives the stock seats/seating position gets old.

If I ever wanted another Jeep type vehicle I'd go with an old 94-97 Land Rover D90. V8, good transmission, good 4x4 system, very basic setup, and extremely capable off road. I owned 5 Rover's and not a single one of them was in the shop for anything. Unlike my 05 Rubicon that basically lived at the dealership when it was under warranty.... I'd also consider an old Suzuki Samari, but as far as Jeep's I'm done with them for good.

"Modified" is the key word here. Jeep guys almost always overlook their mega-buck mods when they bad-mouth other stock rigs on the trail. Considering the H3 was GM's first purpose-built 4x4, it was a home-run. A 2nd-gen H3 would probably have been a JK killer.

Yep exactly! I had to take my completely stock 94 Range Rover Classic SWB with street tires out to save my stock 05 Rubicon once. I was doing some very light wheeling when it wouldn't climb a slightly muddy hill, it dug down and just had 4 wheels spinning. Then it started to rain and the creek started to rise from the rain. I got a ride from a friend on an ATV, got home grabbed my Rover, and had to pull my own Jeep out.... I was rather disappointed in the Rubicon's off road performance in the mud when a 4,500.00 94 Range Rover kicked it's butt in street tires vs a 32,000.00 Rubicon with Goodyear MT/R's...

I "modified" my Rubicon and it eventually could tackle some serious stuff, but it never once had to save my 94 Range Rover's butt lol.

Stock for stock I think an H3 is equal if not better (on the road and creature comforts). I was also happy to find out in 08 that the H3 Alpha won 4Wheeler of the year!!

When I was side by side comparing the 07 JKU and the Adventure H3 I was adding up what it would cost me to make the JKU into what the H3 already is. I figured 3500.00 So even there I know I made the right decision. And so far I have had about 4 or more people ask me about the H3 while out in it. No one has ever asked me about one of my jeeps. Not that they are anything special. The Jeep I was looking at also was not even a Sport. So ya know it was a 30/35 set up. It had 15" Rims with crap street tires.

I love the H3. Even more knowing more about what it really is.I am averaging 16.2mpg. Better than the TJ. Need to bleed the brakes and put it on craigslist.

Only thing I miss is going completely topless on perfect days but it's a 50/50 deal. Go to the beach topless get covered in sand, bugs, and you have to watchout for the dive bombing seaguls... In an H3 u see an inbound boggie u just close the sunroof. Drive topless and get lovely dead animal smells, love bugs smeared all inside your rig, and sunburnt. In an H3 u just roll up the windows lol.

It was fun, but a lot of cleanup afterwards going topless. I can do without lol

I enjoyed running my old YJ with half doors; it only had a hard top and I never took it off. Folding our JK's soft top and putting it back up, and having to screw around with the plastic windows, made going topless a real PITA and not to be done impulsively. I prefer the huge sunroof on the H3T, first sunroof I've had that's large enough for the folks in the front seat to enjoy. Other sunroofs I've had were underwhelming, but the kids in back liked 'em. We'll exercise it a lot now that the hot weather has broken.

Yeah the H3 certainly has a larger moon roof vs the normal sized sun roof's found on most vehicles and I love it. The only vehicle that I truly enjoyed more sunroof/window wise was my Land Rover Discovery's. They had 2 power sun roofs with built in sun shades, and if you had the SE7 model the far rear passengers had the safari windows to enjoy as well. It made the cabin feel very open, and not closed in. After that the 89-91 4Dr Mitsubishi Montero's had a massive moon roof that was very very long and I enjoyed it as well.

I'm actually not troubled by the "it's a Colorado/ Canyon with suv body".
Because it is...lol
That's fine. I still keep driving it and it's 100% paid off. The fact the aftermarket is weak is ok too. It just means the constant desire to modify is quelled. Hahaha.

that was one reason I was excited to get a disco when I bought one is the huge moon roof. only I wasn't paying attention and I bought one without a moon roof without realizing it.

oops...
