That's its just a Colorado with a Hummer body. How much of that is true. What are the differences. If any.

Thanks.

Sorta. The frame is actually longer than the Colorado I believe. Or maybe it's shorter. But essentially it is a Colorado frame. In some ways. They share the same i5 engine too.

Just walk away. In reality, in a sense it was the same platform, but it is a different beast. I got that with the 2 and a Tahoe. The frame is more reinforced. Colorado never came with an optional locker in the rear. And on and on. Ignorant people.

Same basic frame, but the H3 is boxed front and rear and has two additional crossmembers for support. Most of the suspension parts, brakes, etc., on the H3 are 1/2 ton. Engine/trans are the same, but t/cases are different and the BWs on the H3 are stronger and allow for full-time 4x4. Also, they were made on the same plant in LA.

So, as much as they are similar, they are different. And the H2s frame was not even close the frames used on Tahoes.

Here's some great info on the H2 frame...

Those to me are big differences.

Define BW's

Thanks for all the info fast. I like having answers. But will likely ignore the idiots.

they share about 9% of the same parts. They started out with a colorado, made tons of changes, and ended up with an H3. what those people don't understand is what it takes to make something capable off road. Yeah, they did start with a colorado, which aren't bad little trucks off-road to begin with, made a lot of changes, and ended up with something that is very capable. Some people just don't like hummers, and facts aren't going to change their minds. oh well.

Yeah while I was working on a few local ATM change over's I took my H3 to work vs my rental truck. Had a rather redneck guy try to tell me the only true Hummer is an H1. To where I replied yep they're the only true Military Hummer, but the H3 is a very good rig. That's when the Colorado slams came along with the front diff might as well be made of Jello, and the I5 is a complete disaster.... I replied with well yes/no.... The H3 before you has a 5.3L V8, and I have a Cast Iron front diff vs the earlier H3's with aluminum front diff's. I went on to say I own two H3's one V8 and one I5 and that a lot of the diff issues were due to worn bushings which allow the front diff to move. I informed him there are aftermarket fixes for that, and if it still gives you issues you can convert to a solid axle up front. I also said the I5 3.7L is a good engine overall and it's better than Jeep's of the same year and they were 6 cylinders....

He just stood there and said well it's still just a Colorado/Canyon to me, and then turned and walked away.. I was like geez there really are ignorant people in this world lol. Everyone else besides the "redneck" in his barely running 1970 pickup thought my H3 was nice and they loved how it sounded like a "Corvette".

I do agree the only Military Hummer was the H1, but for everyday use there is absolutely nothing wrong with an H3!!! Way more comfortable, maneuverable, and user friendly.

The frame on a 97-06 Wrangler isn't nearly as strong as an H3's If the bottom skid gets bent, or damaged your driveline has nothing else holding it in.

Ah yes, the typical hater comments. I find that every single person that has ever said anything bad about my truck, drives a POS. Jealously makes people act like idiots.

Agree specially when it comes down to go to the pump and fill up...they are like "I get this many miles to the gallon, I couldn't imagine getting as many as u get and still driving that thing"...and I'm always like "well buddy you see right there if the main difference between you and me....you drive what you can afford ...and I drive what I please". It goes without saying I get the stink and A-Hole Look.

Actually, all Hummers were considered purpose built vehicles. They were all clean sheet approaches to a new vehicle. The vehicle was designed and then engineering basically went on the look out for parts that were comparable with the designed build specs. Since the powertrain specs of the Colorado matched those spec'ed for the H3, the assm plant was designated to Shreveport. If memory serves me, there were some design changes made to allow the use of an existing frame (CO), but it had to have some major changes. However, those changes allowed the price of the H3 to be kept inline.

Considering that they (CO/H3) share the same short I-5 engines, transmissions, and other components, that allowed the costs to be kept down, does not imply that the H3 was ever designed after a CO.

(Case in point, I had the H3 and the H2 as designated vehicles under my section, but did not have the Colorado or Tahoe...I also had all Saturn vehicles and Corvette.)

That is one of the reasons the H4 never got off the ground...costs. GM had no small body on frame vehicles to help absorb the costs of the assembly of the vehicle. Just before the 4 was cancelled, Mexico was a designated assm location. But then along came the money woes and the 4 was dismissed from the history as an actual vehicle, and inserted as a "might have been." But the H4 was a total new vehicle concept with an actual purpose build.

Was the guy who said it a Jeep nut? They get insecure around H3s. Just tell him "Yeah, and the Shelby 350 was just a Mustang with racing stripes."

I have had so many so called friends of mine completely stop talking to me, or even act like I don't exist just because I sold my Jeep's and went the Hummer route. Having owned 3 Jeep's from 05-13 I know them inside/out and anyone that says a Jeep is perfect and far superior to the H3 is an absolute liar. Their brakes suck, they rot very quickly in any other climate vs AZ or TX, weak automatic transmissions, poor ride quality (unless you spend $$$ on good coils/shocks), and the back seat comfort is worse than just laying in a pickup bed full of 2x4's with nails in them, but to a Jeep owner they're perfect vs an I5, IFS equipped SUV.....

I was blinded by the Jeep being "the one" for a couple of years, until I actually crawled under an H3. I was extremely impressed with the clearance, skids, and layout of the stock H3 vs a Jeep. Hummer/GM did a lot of research, and to be honest Jeep copied a lot of the H3 layout underneath in the JK/JKU. They moved the fuel tank to the same location as the H3, they attempted to copy the EVAP location as well, but mounted it much much much lower, and a few other small details. I walked away from that H3 thinking to myself one day if I ever needed another SUV I'd have to consider an H3.

Well when I no longer needed my F150 FX4 SuperCrew I wanted another SUV, so I started looking. I wanted a V8 to tow stuff in the future like a pop up camper or small boat. So I overlooked the H3 until a friend told me about the Alpha H3 with a 5.3L V8. I started doing my research, basically same MPG as my F150, cheaper insurance, reliable 5.3L, and just a silly recall on the hood louver vs other SUV's with all kinds of stuff. I found my Alpha and bought it sight unseen and up until that point I had never even sat behind the wheel of one let alone driven one lol. As soon as I turned the key, heard that V8, and drove it for a very very short test drive I was instantly in love with it. I had a 5.5hr drive home, and I found it extremely comfortable, the HVAC was far better than my F150 or my Jeeps, the stock Monsoon stereo was awesome vs my other stock stereo's.

Then came the instant grief from all my Jeep buddies. I had been down that road before with owning Mitsubishi's, Nissan's, and Rover's and I didn't have a single Jeep friend then either. After the H3 made 98% of my so called friends totally ditch me I realized like I had years before that it's not what you drive, it's sharing the same passion of off roading with other enthusiasts!!! Jeep owners apparently get instantly (_!_) hurt if another SUV can go off road out on the same trails they use. Around here most of the Jeep owners sit in car lots and their rigs are just store bought mall crawlers without a single once of dirt/mud, and the drivers have zero off road driving experience. Apparently if you have a massive logo like "MAGIC MIKE" on your hood you're the bomb....

I am SO glad to not be in the crowd anymore!!! The H3 stands out against the cookie cutter Jeep's out there, and I like being different!!! I truly love this Forum, and I never see any online battles in here which was an hourly experience on the #1 Jeep Forum out there.... I just see Hummer owners that enjoy their rigs, off roading, and helping others!!! To me that's what it's all about.

I have several H40 members in my Area and I would really like to get together. If anyone ever needs my help just ask and I'll do my best to help out.

I agree 100%. After 7 years with our H3 3.5, we went for a '10 Rubicon. It was a let down in all aspects, so we dumped it in just a few months in favor of the H3T Alpha and love it. I know precisely what you mean about the Wrangler forums; more cult than tech. We have a ton of Jeeps around here; I'm tempted to put a pair "RUBICON" decals on the hood of the T to confound them.

I actually get a lot of compliments on mine. I think it's because I rarely wash it and it just looks filthy and it shows that I use it off road. I get to talking to people and they are surprised when I tell them that the drivetrain and suspension are bone stock. I only have cosmetic mods so maybe they thought there must have been something done to make it off roadable if that is even a word. But i have seen the looks and sneers as I drive by some jeepers.

Lol I get those occasional "smart remarks" from jeepers but 99% of the time I'm breaking their necks. They always turn back and can't help but stare.

Ive mostly gotten the "its not a real hummer" one from a couple jeepers. But i shut it down but i shut it down by saying if my hummer isnt real bc it isnt the same as the military model then neither is their jeep. I actually get a wave from a couple jeeps in my area now

If I could I would Digglesworth!!

Darn smart phone made a double post lol! Yeah I tried to explain to an ex Jeeper friend that their Jeep wasn't anything like the original Jeep. I kindly pointed to the heated leather seats, and said I don't remember seeing those in WWII Jeeps.... I said same goes for my H3 it's no H1.

The Jeep cult went totally insane as soon as the JKU came out. I remember when it was just CJ/YJ/TJ/LJ's out on the trail, and I never saw 65K Jeeps, or blinged out Oracle headlights, on a single rig. They were just lifted Jeeps with the equipment needed to get the job done. It wasn't about bringing bling to the trail lol. It's like when the JK/JKU started to hit the trails they instantly had to prove something to defend their thin sheet metal and weak engine. That's fine, but they went about it the wrong way for sure.

For 65K I'd rather have something rare and exotic like a Land Rover Defender 90/110, but a JK/JKU no way.

My former Jeep friends called my H3 a DUB Edition, but honestly I see more DUB Edition JK/JKU's these days vs H3's!!!

Before I bought my 08 Alpha I tested an 08 JKU Rubicon that was fully loaded. It had 27K on it vs my Alpha's 109K. I got the keys, and the fuel light was on, but it had enough for a test drive. First thing I did was the highway test (had only driven a 2DR JK at this point). I hit the access road, and prepared to get out onto the freeway. I hit the gas and nada zip happened in the way of acceleration... By the time I hit the end of the on ramp I was barely doing 55MPH. The motor was screaming, but it just wouldn't go. I nearly had an 18wheeler up my (_!_).... I thought to myself imagine this thing with a full tank of gas, added off road accessories, passengers, and gear OMG!!! Once I got it up to 70MPH I slowed down and tried to speed up again with the same results.

I returned it to the dealership, and when asked "what did you think?" I simply said I like it just about as much as the previous owner. That took a second to sink into the salesman head lol, and after that I never looked or thought of another Jeep unless it had a V8. The 3.6L is an improvement, but it's electronic throttle response is horrible it's more like on/off vs a real throttle. My 3.7L H3 has more balls than the 3.8L minus a cylinder!!
