H3 Whole Laundry List of Problems from Driving Across the US - HELP?!

My H3 has been a nightmare recently. I just moved across the US from Wilmington, NC to Phoenix, AZ. Left my car in Charlotte, NC with a sib and just drove it here this past weekend after it had been sitting for a month.

My problems started with the usual sunroof leak. Fixed the hoses before parking it in Charlotte, but was told it was still taking on quite a bit of water when it rained. My brother in law called me and said the interior was full of mold. I hired a crew to steam clean it, and asked him if he would put a tarp over it until I could have it looked at. On top of that apparently the seals for my trans pan went bad and there was a puddle of fluid under the car. Had it towed to a local shop for a fix.

When I arrived last week it turns out they never put a tarp over it. 2 Hurricanes later and the interior was back to being moldy again. The carpet was so saturated you could see the water sitting on top of it. There was no way to salvage it so I tore it all down. Pics below of how I found it and after cleaning it out:

Condition when I found it:

After tearing it all out. Note all the water in the pan:

Cleaned everything, bleached and steamed all the mold spots and put it back together. Unfortunately couldn't salvage the rear cargo mat as well, but kind of digging it without the carpet:

Still have to figure out where it is leaking from. Looks like water is coming in from all 4 rear pillars. I recently put a OEM roof rack on, wondering if rain is collecting in the gutters and getting inside. Don't know if someone here has run into this before, or if there are rear drain tubes I need to replace as well?

Outside of the leaks it seemed mechanically sound. Took it for a spin and determined it was good to start my dive to Phoenix. I took I20 (would not recommend) and started running into all sorts of minor problems...

  • Passenger door handle broke off when opening the door and the assembly came loose in the door, I'll have to take the panel off to fix that.
  • Right taillight somehow filled up with water and shorted out. It was an aftermarket LED light and the panel got fried. Have no idea how it filled up with so much water. Only speculation was from earlier when I drove through a rain shower that it must be coming down the rear pillar and hit the light just right to get in. Replaced it with my OEM lights I had saved, but that just sucks.
  • E brake won't engage. Can depress the petal but it won't "stick." Also hood release broke trying to open the hood. Just FML, right?

Major Problems:

  • Last but not least, and is certainly the biggest issue, I lost 2nd and 4th gear after stopping in El Paso. Had to make the last 400 miles on 1st and 3rd gear alone. Transmission fluid looks like it was over-filled and smells burnt. Any insight into this would be helpful too. I'm hoping I don't need to completely re-build or replace the trans.

I felt like Han Solo the last 200 miles. Just kept muttering "Common' baby, hold together." I guess the silver lining is I made it back safe and have it in a nice dry garage now.

So, thoughts on the Transmission problem? Rear Roof leaks? Anyone in Phoenix know a "guy?!" I tinker under the hood, but am in no means a mechanic.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Dang it man...that's a whole lot of suck. I guess full coverage and accidental fire or theft is out of the question. I kid...good news is that it's a Hummer and it's tough. Time, and effort with a little cash will get it back to good. You might look at some scrap yards for parts and such. Sounds like you need to go through it with a fine toothed comb and lots of lube. Good luck man..

The second reason water gets is into the cabin is the roof rack mounting bolts. They are of the rivnut style and they will rust out fairly easily. Since you mentioned a roof rack install I would suspect they are the culprit. I had the exact same issue. Water would leak through the rivnuts and drain down to the floor.
Not a hard fix, just a few hours and a welder. Removing the plastic is easy and you will see right where the water is leaking from, the plastic/metal channel tends to keep water puddled up if the little drain holes are plugged.
I ground out all the rivnuts and welded in weld-nuts instead. Remember the weld nuts will still be open to the interior so a dab of silicone over the new bolts has kept my interior leak free.

Well this just put my day in perspective. Thanks! When ever you doubt it will be crappy there is someone with a bit more going on.
I to have battled the wet ceiling and floor in both my H3 07 & the Miss' H3 06.
Still have slight sepage from time to time.
As for the door handle both interior front doors have had problems.
The transmission.... Ah???

First picture shows old Torx head rusted and would spin and not come out. Had to grind off the head.
Second picture shows new weld nut ready to tack, far stronger.

It's the Tranny. :(

I unplugged the battery to check to see if it was an electrical issue. When I fired it back up I was getting gears at random, but nothing more than 2nd. Guess I'll start looking for a salvage part or a rebuild. If anyone is around the Phoenix area and has a recommendation let me know!

What I used in the bed of my 3T were knurled Nut-Serts in 6mm size. I coated them with POR-15 before I installed them and they've worked very well for me. I used stainless 6mm button head bolts to hold down the plastic panels in the bed of my truck. I haven't done the roof inserts only because I haven't detected a problem...yet.

Welcome to Phoenix! Good thing is if you get water in your H3 again just park in the sun, open the windows and it will be dry in a few minutes.

I agree that it is the roof bolts that hold down the rails. I have one that leaks a little bit. For the parking brake, you'll likely need a new parking brake assembly. I've had that fail too. It's a whole new pedal, mount and cables that pass through the firewall. If I recall correctly, the cables end under the doors and you mate up to the existing parts. It is pretty self explanatory when you get the new part.

I may be able to help a bit with Reloader on some issues but I'm pretty much not home until December. (and I'm kinda offering his help without telling him :emb:). I would certainly drain some trans fluid if it is overfilled and see if that helps.

Just a tip on mold if you find it comes back. I have dealt with issue quite a bit with rag tops over the years. Bleach and ammonia won't always kill it. I have found a dilution of half warm water and white vinegar works best. Let it soak for 15-20 minutes, then neutralize with baking soda and water solution. then use a wet/dry vac and warm water. pour it on and suck it out (Just be careful around electronics). Then let air dry. Kills the mold dead. make sure you hit every surface, as mold spores get airborne and can spread all around the interior.

I would like to extend this offer to anyone in the Phoenix and surrounding areas. I can work on your Hummers and other vehicles in your stable.
And those who have a Rancho lift kit that needs installing.

I don't think there's any way in the world they could've tied down a tarp tight enough to stay on in a hurricane or heavy thunderstorm. I think the only way you could've protected your truck would be to seal it in a Conex container. Now as it is; the interior electrical connectors aren't weather sealed like the external electrical connectors. I would be worried about everything you can't see like electrical connections under the dash. Separate everything and plug and unplug those connectors so they "scrape together" for a fresh connection.

That sounds like rotten luck. Sorry you are going through it.

This thread scares me a bit. Next thing I was going to look for to add to my Hum was roof rails? Is it not s simple as ordering these https://www.hummerpartsclub.com/p/HPC_83016.html and putting them on the top? Is there more to it?

It is that simple. They're talking about the U channel already in the black plastic trim on the top of the roof that those rails attach to.
