Just got the truck back from having lower balljoints done, only to find out that they didn't use Moog like they had said they would. So how long should I expect these units to last? They did say they'll limited-warranty them, so when they go, they'll prorate the joint and I'll only need to cover the price difference to upgrade, but it's still a hassle.

And double @%$# because it looks like the parts pricing system the shop used had the moog components mispriced, so they were listed at twice their actual cost, which is the main reason they didn't go with that brand. I checked when I got back to my computer, and sure enough the shop's price is way off, so I called them back asking, basically, WTF? They're checking into it, and hopefully they'll realize they should have gone with the Moogs, which might add about $30 to my bill, and they'll do the swap on their own dime for inconveniencing me.

If they had the moog parts on the bill, then I would make them replace them now, you paid for them and they thought he will never look or know the difference.
Plan an simple they tried to rip you off,,,

Another update: It turns out that the Moog balljoint goes for $60 (each) over the counter at OReilly, but at the shop it's $109. The difference is (and this was NOT explained at the shop), if I buy the part over the counter and carry to the shop myself, they charge $95 an hour and there's no warranty. If I buy the part from them at the higher price, they charge $75 an hour, and if the thing ever breaks I just bring it in and they put in the new one, no matter how many times it goes out. So I'll stick with the cheaper part for now, and they've agreed that I can "upgrade" to the Moog units when these go out for the difference in part cost (that's on the workorder).

On the plus side, the truck does handle better now, and it's nice not to have to walk on eggshells (figuratively speaking) when cornering or braking. Next up: new shocks.

How about learning to do the work yourself. It easier, and those ball joints are only $51.79 at Rockauto. If your going to be serious about 4x4ing, you have to learn to turn your own wrench. But personally I would go with MEVOTECH because they're plenty strong and only $21.99

Actually, I am pretty comfortable with doing my own work. I just lack the facilities to do it. Ball joints on an IFS truck are a bit more hairy than most repairs I've done though. I'd need at least a 1/2" torque wrench, plus pickle forks and a press for the balljoint itself, in addition to sockets and combination wrenches. I was just lamenting on my shocks thread that if I had tools, I'd be a lot further along on getting shocks installed as well.
