Transmission Issue -- PLEASE HELP!!

So after putting about $6k in mods into my 2007 H3X, my transmission crapped out yesterday. 1st and 2nd gear still work fine, but the rig won't shift into 3rd gear and my maximum speed is about 55mph. When it first happened, the check engine light came on with a P0756 code:

P0756 Shift Solenoid 'B' Performance or Stuck Off

• Low transmission fluid level
• Dirty transmission fluid
• Faulty shift solenoid 'B' valve
• Shift solenoid 'B' valve harness or connectors
• Shift solenoid 'B' valve circuit is open or shorted

Assuming the first or second causes, I brought the H3 in for a transmission fluid change, but it still wouldn't shift into 3rd after the fluid swap.

I then brought it into my local GM dealer and they are recommending a FULL transmission replacement at $5,000!!!! Their tech says my H3 was hooked up to their scanning tool and it can't locate 3rd gear, so they think internal parts are worn. They also said they found error code P0218 (transmission over temp), but I never saw that code on my tool.

I'd probably sell off the H3 and get into a new car for $5k, so before doing that, does anyone have any recommendations on this?

1. Could this all be caused by a faulty Shift Solenoid B (the original error code) and it just needs to be replaced?
2. Do any of those no slip additives work? Should I try topping off my fluids with those? Any recommendations?
3. Accepting donations if nothing else works and I have to replace the tranny... :gaah:

Well... the first step was to check to see if your fluid was actually bad...

You can probably get a new or rebuilt transmission installed for around $2k.

Don't take it to the dealership... people call it the stealership for a reason.

Find a good transmission shop in town, and use common sense.

I think it's funny that GM made a fault code reason that says dirty transmission fluid...

I guess they shouldn't expect people to pull the dipstick to see for themselves..

You do realize that probably 90 percent of the people who drive vehicles, have no idea if transmission fluid is good or bad, either by sight or by smell; or even where the dip stick is located?:thumbs: Small population of vehicle owners are gear head. :giggle: Also dirty fluid and low fluid would have the same possible symptom, low to no flow.

You can get a decent rebuilt trans from Rapter for about 2500 and then pay someone to install. Or like someone else noted, find a reliable trans shop, which can be as hard as finding an honest dealer. But there are some out there.

Try fixing what the original code told you what the problem was.

If it's the worst case scenario - a new trans - you can find a shop to do it for much less than the dealership quoted you. Hopefully it's the solenoid. If you're not comfortable with dropping the pan, start looking for an independent shop in your area that has a good reputation.

That statement is so true. To prove your point , my work Ford Expedition doesn't even have a trans dip stick. To check the trans fluid you have to remove a cap on the trans. What a pain and a bad design.

Thanks guys. Picked up 2 new solenoids yesterday (ended up being $18 from the Chevy dealer for each) and I'm bringing it in tomorrow to have it installed. Hopefully this is the fix as I can't stomach a full trans replacement right now

5k is obscene - I get some swear by factory parts, and for the most part I look there first... that said, there are a lot of better-then-stock 4L60e transmissions out there (e.g. Monster transmission) that are half the money. A reasonable rebuild from a good shop is 1500-2500 out-the-door (that means remove, rebuild, reinstall). That said, do get recommendations about the shop(s) you consider because there are some crap (like AMCO) that you should avoid at all cost.

I went to GM for my transfer case and it is covered under the powertrain warranty, which covers :

Engines, Auto tranny, and T cases for 3 year, 100k
Manual tranny, CVT for 1 year, 12k
Engine, Transmission components for 1 year, unlimited miles.

Dealer quoted me $3500 plus another $1400 to install, total of $4900. I should stop going to the dealer during the work week when i'm in a suit :giggle:

That's a nice way of telling you "they don't want to do it", without actually saying so. I run into this from time to time on all sorts of dealings. It's easier than saying no and turning you away. This way they save face, and the choice is entirely up to you.

A body guy turned me on to this technique. He hates working on rusted out junk, and prefers to only work on cream puff muscle cars, that are really in good shape. So he quotes ridiculously high prices to either A) scare off the customer...or B) make it worth his while if they agree to the quote. Either way, he wins.

A r-case swap on an H3 is a pretty easy job.

I called a local shop for a new transfer case and they quoted be 1k more than the dealer with a quicker warrenty! :whaa:
I thought it was because I had a hummer = money, but no more than a week later they had a for sale sign in the window. I guess they wanted money before they went out.

I had the same issue, H3T with 160K mi. Wouldn't find 4th. Solenoid replacement fixed it.
