Transmission cooler lines

Who has replaced these lines? I had my truck in the shop yesterday and saw that my lines are rotted to the point that they are actually seeping. They aren't very expensive $40 for both lines but they look like a pain to access and replace. I though about cutting the lines back the trans where they are not rotted. I could use rubber trans lines from that point but it is very close to the exhaust.

Well, while having other worn out parts replaced I asking them to look for future problems. They felt the transmission cooler lines were going to be a problem and even if I didn't install them right away we should order them because they could get a lot harder to find (H3T) in the future. I didn't have time to look...and I mostly trust that Chev dealer (never involved with Hummer, has only been looking after mine for a few years now.)

  • 20788330 PIPE F 041280 $192.99 CAD
  • 20788333 PIPE AR 041280 $123.99 CAD

Googling those parts now I find pricing like $92.30 CAD and $48.15 CAD... but who knows if that catalog site could even acquire them. Dealer deserves a markup for doing homework I didn't have time to do at the time.

They received them a few months later, held them until we were doing other work under the truck that would have it up on the lift. +6 hours later they admitted they were harder to install than the books says. They billed for 4.

Not something I could have replaced myself. Not something I would have know was going to fail or had failed. I watch the engine temp...we don't have transmission temps do we?

I ended up replacing the solid trans lines with -6an stainless steel ptfe lines. This is what I used;

2 - 5ft -6an lines

2 - 3/8 Barb fittings

2 - 1/4 npsm to -6an fittings

2 - 45 degree -6an female to male fittings

I looked at the tranny lines on mine the other day when changing oil. I bought this vehicle used, not that long ago (rust-belt car). There was definitely some serious rust scale on the lines by the fan. I knocked the scale off with course sandpaper and coated them liberally with oil. It'll slow the rusting down, but they'll eventually need to be changed.

I bet there are a lot of H3's out there which owners won't ID the rusty lines, they'll eventually leak and toast the tranny.
