Transfer Case mode indicators

Well after playing with my transfer case yesterday, I'm seeing some strange stuff. After going to 4lo, I switched back to 4hi and everything looks fine. However, when pulling out of the driveway things felt weird. I got in a parking lot and did a full lock turn and I am in 4hi lock even though the indicator shows 4hi. I tried to go to 4hi lock and it didn't transfer.

I tried to go from 4hi to 4hi lock later at about 30 mph and it went to 4hi lock. Transferred back to 4hi and it shows it transferred, but its still locked. Are these symptoms of the shift fork issues or could there be an electronic issue somewhere? Keep in mind my PCM probably does not appreciate my engine mods.

I have had the same symptoms in the past, I believe others who have had the same ended up having to replace the transfer case before long

Broken/worn plastic shift fork? 06 and early 07's were affected. Cheap(ish) repair.

I had my shift fork replaced after seeing symptoms like that. I could not get it to stay in 4hi.

After I posted this I searched a bit and coming up with the same conclusion. I got it to so back into 4hi normal street mode by switching it and backing up. I am going to leave it there for now until I have time to tackle it.

I am glad to know that the transfer case electronics work just fine after the engine swap. One less thing to check off on the checkout list. This thing is going to be a beast in 4lo. I have to really jam the brake to keep it from power crawling at idle :)

This thing is really hacking me off. It is stuck in 4 hi lock, so I said the hell with it and just pulled the front driveshaft. I got about a mile down the road and it unlocked from 50/50 leaving me stranded. I had to walk home and get my driveshaft and put it back in. And I'm still stuck in 4 hi lock. I'll probably park it for a while and drive my car until I pull everything down in a couple of weeks. I have to change my torque converter and I'll just have to add this to the to-do list since the t-case will be down anyway.

Casey when you do your torque converter can you do me a HUGE favor and do a write up on it. With pics if it's not a pain in the d***. I am looking to do this myself, I am noticing it isn't free spinning like it should so I thought I would just put a performance one in when I change it out. More of an excuse to put in a performance one in than anything else... I'm sure there are other guys on here that would love to see it as well...
Please! :D

This will be my third time to pull the transmission. The first was for the engine swap, the second, for low pump pressure after the rebuild.

I can get the transmission on the floor in under 2 hours. It's just not a real fun job.

Pulled the transfer case today and cracked it open. Definitely the shift fork. It's not broken but its pretty badly worn and the shift hub is worn too. Are these both usually changed together? I'll have to go source parts on Monday.

Is there a trick to making SURE the shift fork spring does not pop off and fall loose inside when reassembling the two case halves?

Also, whats the best source for the shift fork parts? Do the (ex)dealers stock them normally and if they do, will I get new cast parts?

In my experience dealers do not keep these parts in stock. I usually order parts from gmpartshouse.com or gmpartsdirect.com. double check your part numbers, read through the directions, make sure you have all tools and parts necessary to complete the task.

This $14 dollar repair is about to get more expensive. I broke the LITTLE guide pin at the bottom of the shift cam. Yes, the one that it says in the manual to be careful not to break it. I don't know what the shaft is made of but its not drillable with anything from home depot. I drilled about 15 minutes with 3 different bits and am barely 1/8" deep and basically just making a bigger hole. I was going to drill the end and use a 1/8" guide pin but that doesn't look viable now.

Has anyone else done this and did you just have to replace the whole shift cam? Sooooo pissed off right now. All I had left to do was get the two halves lined up fall in. It took me about 10 tries the other day to get it to fall into place. I was on about the third try today when this happened.

Edit : research shows this part to be 89059539. Will confirm this with a few phone calls tomorrow.

Are u positive it's not encoder motor. Mine is popping into N, the only way I was able to move if I 4lock it. Even then it will pop into N.

Positive. I broke the little pin on the shift shaft when trying to reassemble the case. The original problem was a worn shift fork.
