Transfer Case Fluid Change

Wow, sorry to bring back this old thread guys but I'm getting ready to change out the transfer case fluid in my 2006 H3 this weekend and I just need clarification on the amount of fluid required. Is the TOTAL amount of fluid to replace 1.6qts OR is it 1.6qts plus an additional 250ml through the speed sensor hole (for a total of ~1.86 qts)?

It depends on what year your H3 is. The cutoff is somewhere in this thread I think, but I believe it's only 2006 and early 2007's that need to be filled like that. Later models have the fill port in the right location and you just fill it until it reaches the bottom of the fill port.

Again, my info was based on engineering data and that is that!
However this is a cut and paste of the GM service information from a DVD that is about two years old now. Granted this is a few years old, and possibly GM and Borg Warner have changed their minds again, and I'm not even sure if Dex IV is still good; and honestly don't care. (One reason why I very seldom post on this site. But at times I do try and help, but that is getting less and less and less.)

My personal opinion is that either will probably work and since it is off warranty who cares so long as it does work. My suggestion is to call a local GM dealer and beg them to pull up the electronic service manual, and pull up the fluid specs for the 2006 Hummer H3 transaxle and see if it is the same as I just posed from 2-year old DVD version, or changed to something else. A dealer pulls up info that can be updated daily via an electronic system and not much more accurate info can be obtained.

AND THIS WILL BE MY LAST POST ON THIS THREAD AND I MEAN LAST!

I always wondered why GM doesn't just use a name or weight of oil like the rest of the world uses. Instead they give us a part number! Wtf does that mean?

I have 2 questions.... I am so confused...
1. So what oil do I use for my transfercase?
2. Are the 2 transfer case interchangeable?
3. How can you tell which one you have?

I can answer 2 of those

2. yes they are interchangeable
3. assuming you still have the t-case your truck came with....adv H3's all had the 4:1 t case, non adv had the 2:1 (easiest way to tell if its an adv model is to see if it has factory locker options)

Just rebuilt my TC and as a GM tech the most current fluid spec listed is dexron VI. I added to the fill hole, then added an additional 250ml to speed sensor hole as GM specifies. Why is this so complicated? Fluid is cheap so just change it often. 30k is a good milage for an average. I have a 06 adv

30k is a bit long IMO. The fill hole got moved up higher in 08, so it’s slightly less complicated.

Transfer fluid

Has anyone tried this in their transfer? Last weekend I had to swap radiator (CSF leaking...ugh) and refilled transmission with this. Shifts smother than it has ever. Wonder if it will have a noticeable improvement in transfer.

It will work just fine being Dex IV as form being smother in a t case I have no idea sir

I'm using Redline D6 as recommended by Redline. Could have used D4, a little thicker, but went with D6 for the fuel economy. Using Redline in all the holes, except Mobil 1 for the engine oil. May try Redline 5w30 next change. The front differential was the dirtiest looking and definitely the worst smelling. I think I'll change the front differential oil when I change the engine oil and filter from now on!
