Trade in the T?

It might be that time for me to trade in the T but it's nothing 100%. This February makes 5 years with her and I always loved her but my MPG was always on my mind. So few things I need to know and first what would a 2009 base H3T with 45,XXX go for a trade in? Dodge is offering me 19,000 but I feel that's a low ball, yes I'm tracking I have a nice size dent in my passenger door and a broken rear sway bar link but I feel like I'm being taking for a ride. Give me a weekend to wash/buff her with all the parts off and I bet I could get more.

Plus if I do get a Ram it'll be a 1500 4x4 crew cab in Mineral Gray and that's the only color I want. One of my soldiers has one fully load and getting 14 on post and almost 18 in the high way. With a 31 gallon tank that 434 miles street and 558 on the highway. For me one trip to DFW and back to post I'm empty and him he still has over 1/4 of a tank.

Second I always felt if I'm going to have a big truck MPG then I mind as-well have a big truck. 300 miles on 24 gallons street and 356 miles all high way so that boils down to 13 street and 15 highway.

Third is in less the 4 months my T will be paid off and under my name and not some bank. So I have zero plan on trading in but if something dose come by I might do it. Just wanted some input.

If you are looking for a better price for it, see what Carmax might offer. They often are better that regular dealer trade-in prices.

Jay I haven't kept up with H3 prices but many dealers won't get you where you need to be on a trade. If you wind up getting rid of the T selling it yourself will probably put more cash in your pocket.

$19,000 for a truck with body damage seems like a very fair offer to me. Remember, they need to make a profit. Many people seem to forget that.

Private sale will always net you more. Carmax only offered us $5000 on my wife's old 2006 2dr Civic. Sold in on Auto Trader for $7500. Plus we'd all love to compensate you for your parts ;)

I'de jump all over $19K on a trade in. Sounds like a great deal to me...dent or not.

You might get more selling it outright...but you gotta deal with people directly. Not sure about your state but in Indiana, auto sales tax (7%) is calculated on the difference between the trade-in value and the new car value. So, if you take RAM-1500 price of $34K...minus your $19K trade-in, you only pay $1050 in tax. If you sell the T outright and then show up at the dealer to buy the new RAM...you'll be paying tax on the total price, $2380...Ouch! You might check in to this when crunching your numbers.

Then again, if you keep it for a second vehicle...you can start morphing it into a monster!

Owning a paid-off vehicle goes a long way in regards to mileage. I can go over 350 miles before I need to start worrying about a fill-up. Most of the time I fill up around 250-300 miles between tankfuls. I already owned a full-size truck when I bought my T. My intention was to use it as a recreational vehicle and it wound up as a daily driver while my other vehicles turned in to projects. I'm not so sure I'd buy another new vehicle again. The electronics have taken the new ones to a whole new level of complexity I'm not comfortable with; especially for an off-road vehicle.

My advice, keep it until you know what any military end strength draw down will do to you. SAve the $$ until you know what is happening in a year

My advice, take a steel bat or a brick or something very hard and hit yourself in the head and forget about getting rid of your H3T ;) just my two cents :)

I would never recommend getting rid of your truck as close to paying it off as you are. You'll probably never have another T and will regret getting rid of it for a long time.
Good advice to hold your decision based on military end strength; I know the Air Force is looking at dumping 25,000 more troops, and you can only account for a small portion of that to attrition--retirements and separations. The rest will be forced out and it's going to suck for alot of good people. I can only imagine the Army in it's brilliance (ha ha, Army intelligence!) will be doing the same thing as the Air Force always follows suit.

I know the urge for strange (to get a new vehicle in this case ) is strong, but you've got to resist giving up your hard earned T.

Good luck in your decision.

So what kind of interest rate and term would you be looking at on the Ram?

Another factor to consider.

With all the numbers on the Ram is
vehicle price 43,615
taxes 1,195
total credit 16,700
out the the door with tags 28,444

You bring out a great point and something I always keep in mind :sigh:

Funny part is my wife says the same thing every time I even think about another truck. Sad part is the times I went to the dealer I talked to my T and told her don't worry :whaa:. I guess I just want to see something new and she tells to monstaline the T already.

I've been wanting to learn how to ride a bike for years!!! A harley davidson sportster is what I think I'll like because of the skinny fuel tank plus I'm not looking for anything new so about $4,000 is my limit.

So what kind of interest rate and term would you be looking at on the Ram?

Another factor to consider.

From my bank I was approved $40,000 with 0.99% APR, with the $28,XXX out the door looking about $450 a month. Right now with my T I don't have to make a payment until next august but I plan to have it by tax time. Alll in all for gas I'll look into motor cycle classes and getting a bike and on the something new I'll start planing for the new paint job.

Thanks for all the info guy but having one paid off truck and rolling my payment to the wife's SUV sound like a better plan then to be in with $59,XXX with two car notes.

One big advantage that I like about my T is maneuverability. With my K1500 I can forget about doing a U-turn on anything less than a six lane blvd. I'm used to it after owning my big truck for twenty-four years, but I really appreciate the size of my T. U-turns are easy with my T since it's about the same size as the older reg cab pickups.
