The Scorpworks Steering Rack Fix

I think we all have a common goal.

Totally. Right now, this thread has been hijacked... it's just another steering rack thread. :) Here is what I'll add:

I went back to stock after losing the Hunner sleeve in Moab: CRAP it's a bad design, there's a ton of movement back and forth on a stock rack with a new stock bushing. We absolutely need something that holds it steady from left to right. I think we need solid or NEAR-solid mounts-- a little bit of give would be okay, but it needs to be minimal and only under extreme force, not just turning the steering wheel.

Hunner: I'm on my 2nd sleeve, would love to test out any prototypes as we all work toward a solution.

What we need is LESS movement (none to minimal?) on the drivers side, and the passenger side's solution should match. For now, the Hunner Sleeve is the best solution we have, but we need something for the driver's side. Near-solid driver's side bushings may be the answer.

Also, a brace that holds the steering rack together. (It's a lot easier to replace a tie rod than a rack...)

As a bonus: you can get flex-lines made at Napa Auto Parts for around $100. Doesn't solve the problem but makes the lines less likely to break if the rack breaks. Seems like silly money to spend but I spent it.

Big-unit: what are you working on, other than a teaser? Are you working on something for the driver's side?

I am also looking into getting a few center brace plates made, which would cost around $150 each from my source, and would require welding to the frame. Once I get details I can post a thread to gather interest, but does that sound like something you could get made cheaper, Hunner or Bigunit?

Bigunit posted this photo of the prototype a few nights ago. I got to check this thing out - it is BEEFY! It has not been installed on an H3 yet and it has some more work to be done, but this is the general idea.

THIS^^

Holy crap is that mean looking!!! That is going to make a big difference!

Curious, what are the slots for? Is there an intention to run an O ring of sorts to dampen this some?

Not sure, the design isn't finished yet IIRC. Too bad you were snapping racks quicker then he can design lol

Funny... my power steering went out trying to make a turn with the front locker on a few days ago... my heart just SANK.

Then a buddy told me to flip the key off & on... all was well. :horns: Felt so dang familiar though... :D

The one problem I see with the design is being able to get the lower bolt in with the front diff in the way. Something to think about. Very beefy.

Have already thought of the bottom bolt/diff clearance issue.

So no steering problems yet on the JK?

I have pounded the PISS out of the JK, done things I never would have dreamed of... and not the tiniest problem (although the throwout bearing was squealing, and is getting me a new free clutch today!) I'm pretty amazed. The adventure series H3's may be in the same class as this thing, but MINE was nowhere near it aside from the gearing (gearing sucks on this, but as you saw on fb today... that's changing friday :D)

Love the design with the O ring, I think that's a good call, my main concern about this was the metal on metal connection, I think a thick O rig would give you some nice stick, and damp it just a tad maybe as well?

So how many miles do you have on the JK now, and how many did you put on the H3?

Put about 9k on the H3, and I've got about 3k on the JK now. What I've done TO the JK though, is much worse than anything I ever did to the H3... I was much nicer to it. I still don't spin & hop & slam into crap like some of my buddies do, but I'm not scared of taking a slide off a big feature. I'm doing lines like this now, that I would never have touched with the 3 (but wouldn't do unlocked in the JK either!!)

funny how this almost looks normal in the pic... it's pretty ridiculous in person.

I think my crossmember was toast by rack #3... the last two times were just an exercise in futility. :D

damn! Thats some tough stuff...I wanna get up there and give that stuff a try once im locked.

Get one of those steering clamps & head out man... you'd kill it out here, tons of fun stuff to challenge yourself on. It's not QUITE moab... but it's pretty darn fun!
I'm excited to see such a bomber looking fix... I really think that & some better DS bushings will solve the issue!

Awesome! I gotta get out that way maybe this summer...

I gotta get my brother to tag along with his JK. He will be locked up by then and I should have a front one by then too

Lots of us have the Scorpwork's steering rack bracket installed. It is a great fix for a design weakness in the original rack clamp/bracket.
