Yesterday I went up to big bear to celebrate the new year. It took us 4 hours and 15 min to get up to big bear due to the insane amounts of people trying to get up there to see some snow. We left at 9:30 got there at 1:45. Got lunch and by the time we left to hit the trail it was getting late. Right before we got to the trailhead we saw a guy who was in the middle of 3N16 (one of the main dirt roads in big bear) starting a small fire. It was cold in big bear, roughly a foot of snow with temps around 25 when we hit the trail and 12 degrees when we got off the trail. So I pulled off to the side and asked him if everything was ok. Luckily we saw him. He took an offshoot trail in his toyota truck with his wife and 2 kids. They got about a half a mile down and hit some ice, the truck broke through it and got stuck. They were there for a few hours, as he hopped in my passenger seat we were talking. He is retired from the navy for 22 years. He said he wasn't worried about himself because he has the survival skills needed but he was worried about the kids and wife. They were in the truck when we got there and he had laid down some markers for people to see. Anyways he get there and hook up the strap and get them going on their merry way.

In the pic you see the strap wrapped around his bumper. Behind it was the hitch so I knew it wouldnt break off.

When we got there the snow was fresh. Not a single soul even attempted the gatekeeper since the last time it snowed so I knew it would be a good time. I broke trail which was cool and made it tougher. I have video I am going through now for the gatekeeper. The gatekeeper was easy. It was the hillclimb after it that was tough, Its an offcamber climb so the snow drifts were high literally calling for redline assaults spinning tires and going till you stop then back up and hit it again.

Heres my brother at the beginning of the hillclimb by the time he hit it the snow broken down from myself and my buddy behind me but still very slippery.

here is squeaky after the hillclimb, entering the rock garden.

Here is my brother on the next hillclimb

By the time we got to "the narrows" it was dark, this is one spot where we all had to winch. After giving it about 5-10 attempts there was no way we would make it without cable. it was just too slippery.

Here is a sample video of me on it while it was dry. Throw about a foot of snow on it and it was tough. We probably could of made it if we stayed right on the easy line but we wanted to go left.

This was me last night.

On the way down there were a few sketchy parts. The most sketchy was the drop off by the tree. It is very common that people hit their doors and windows on this tree. There is a good chunk of bark missing from all the people that hit it. On the way down I started to slide and I thought I was gonna hit it. Afterwords my brother and buddy told me I was already past the tree but I didnt know that so as I slid down thinking I would hit the tree I punched the gas, passenger tire hit a rock rear driver tire slid and fell into a hole back passenger tire came up a few feet off the ground and add the momentum with that they thought I was going over, I thought I was going over but luckily I landed back on all 4's. I had to get out and take a breather, I truly thought that was it for a second. The rest of the trail downhill was uneventful.

Overall it was a great day to start 2015. I will get the video up soon.

Dam you and 3 jeeps in front of us made that gatekeeper unpassable with out winch. I had to winch myself, then my bro and if we would continue Fernando. I guess likely my front driveshaft double joint started to clank and beenig > 2pm I desided not to risk it and turned around. We had to use snatch block to winch my bro out.
