Solo Hauser Geode Bed Trip

On Saturday 11/30/2013 I took my wife and step son out to Hauser Geode Beds. My wife has been wanting to take her son who had never been there, so we decided to go ahead and do the trip even though it was planned at the last minute and we didn't have another vehicle lined up to go with us.

We hit the road at 9:40 and didn't make it out to Hauser until 2:20 so there wasn't much time to dig before dark. In retrospect I noticed that the brakes took more pedal than normal and once they did apply the grabbed funny. Once we parked, my wife thought she smelled burning oil, but I couldn't smell anything.

Here are some pictures from Hauser.

Since we got a late start and we weren't finding any geodes, we dug until dark and then drove out using the HID fog lights. It was a good thing that we had the HID fog lights and the GPS because finding the correct trail out in the dark would have been very difficult.

As we left Chiriaco Summit, it seemed like the automatic transmission was slipping, so I pressed the OnStar button and requested a diagnostic. They said the transmission wasn't responding as expected and I should get it serviced within 7 days. I stopped in Indio and checked the trans fluid and it wasn't even registering on the dip stick. After trying to get Dexton VI at three different Truck Stops we ended up at a AutoZone. As soon as I added fluid the engine overheated. A quick look underneath revealed where most of the ATF had gone.

After a phone call to Zach, thanks Zach, we decided it was time to call Auto Club and utilize the Premier 200 mile tow, since it was 124 miles home.

Apparently the AFT was leaking when we got to the Hauser Geode Beds, so we were very lucky that we made it to Indio before we had to call the Auto Club. The Hauser Geode Beds are 25 miles off the payment and 10 miles off the graded road. The moral of this story is to:
  1. Never go out into the desert alone. We would have been sleeping in the H3T all night if we had broken down a little earlier.
  2. Keep replacement fluids in the vehicle. You might need to replace fluids on the trail and even if you do make it to a service station they might not have the fluids you need.

So on Monday I had the truck towed into Tustin Buick GMC for service and a couple hours later they called to inform me that I had coolant in my transmission and that I need a new radiator and a new transmission to the tune of $4,400. They also said that since the radiator caused the problem the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty wouldn't cover the transmission. I pointed out that the radiator was the stock radiator and that it has a history of failing prematurely, but they weren't accepting any responsibility. So I asked them to see what GM customer loyalty would do to help. After a couple of agazoning hours they called back and said that if I paid $450 they would cover the remainder and I happily accepted that offer.

The moral of this story is if you still have one of those cheesy @$$ GM radiators with an integral transmission cooler you should install an external transmission cooler before it fails and takes your transmission out with it. I know I will be adding an external transmission cooler very soon.

yep, I agree 1000%. Trans cooler to avoid cross contamination.

Fluids, I carry
Brake fluid
Engine oil
Trans fluid
Power steering fluid
Diff fluid
I should probably pick up some manual trans fluid for the T case...

Glad you made it out ok and that your not stuck out in the middle of no where.

In your search of adding a trans cooler I think you may want to look into this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tru-Cool-Th...ng-Brand-/171174390325?_trksid=p2054897.l4276

The thermal bypass doesnt allow your trans to overcool. While Overheating is worse then overcooling in the long run overcooling can do damage. This bypass doesnt allow the fluid to make its way into the cooler until its warmed up. Some start allowing fluid to move through at 160 others at 180. You can choose your temp. Personally I will go with 160.

Hope your back up and running in no time!

Glad that they stepped up and took care of it. If they wouldn't have, already had it in play to get it taken care of. Saves you a tow lol

Thanks for your help Zach!

I'll be researching external trans coolers. I'm sure I can find an overkill solution :emb:! The challenge will be to find a simple but effective solution.

Hauser was fun, well the driving more than the digging. The diggings seem to be getting pretty slim, but the trail through there is quite a trip. More challenging than I remembered. We used to come home with 5 gallon buckets full of potential geodes. This time we only found 3 small ones between all three of us.

I had a similar situation two weeks ago (only on paved roads). The oil pressure gauge has been acting funky on my K1500 so I replaced the sender. It is a "Made in China" part these days. The reddish sealer they put on the threads is supposed to create a good oil seal. I tightened the sender to what I thought was a safe torque. A couple of days later I hit the road for a trip to LA. By the time I got to Santa Barbara...Ellwood, actually, I was seeing blue smoke trailing behind me on 101. Uh-oh. I pulled off into a shopping center and was dripping oil from the left side of the engine. I shut it down and let it cool off. Turns out that I think the engine heat softened that reddish sealer because the oil sender was finger tight. Of course, I had left my tools at home. Duh. I bought a 9/16" open end wrench and tightened the sender. I had only lost a quart of oil which had sprayed underneath the chassis of my truck. I had just done an oil change and was able to top off with the quart that was lost. What a mess only one quart of oil causes. I was pretty lucky on this one. I called off that trip and went back home. It took me a couple of hours to clean the underside of my truck. I used liquid laundry detergent with a brush. I hooked up a hose to the spigot on my hot water heater. A combo of hot water and detergent worked pretty well in cleaning the underside of my truck.

Got the T back from Tustin Hummer yesterday 20131209 and it appears to be as good as new. They didn't need to replace the transmission they only rebuilt it. The radiator has a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty and the transmission is still covered under the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

We are looking into renting an Iridium satellite phone for our next trip probably from Roadpost :link:. Rates are $8/day for the 9505A and $10/day for the 9555. Loss/theft protection is $5/day (probably not necessary if you keep the phone in the vehicle and don't leave the country). You only pay from the date you list as your need date until the day you ship the return, but they recommend 2 days margin incase the UPS shipment is delayed), so a weekend trip would be $40 to $50 without insurance. Talk time is $1.79/minute and SMS/text is $0.69/message (up to 160 characters).

So, if a person were stranded out if the desert, is there a way he could send a SMS/text message to the forum and find someone willing and able to provide assistance?

SPOT has a few solutions for you:

Phone with what looks to be good rates:http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=122

Or if you just want to be able to send a one-way text message, email : http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=116

Glad it all got worked out. These are some of my worries about venturing out into the wilderness. My girlfriend says I'm a hypochondriac about my truck. I bet that would all change if she had to spend the night in the desert.

I have to admit I'm partial to Iridium because it actually provides global coverage because someday I hope to get a long range power boat. Here is a link to Spot coverage :link:. However, sadly it will be years before I get my boat.

Here is a :link: to a good comparison of Spot and Iridium.

For me, since I'll only need the phone for the weekend, the fact that Roadpost.com rents Iridium by the day it is cheaper that renting a Spot phone for a week.

Here is a :link: to a Thuraya color map.

Radiator is actually 12 months unlimited mileage now they should know that. Does that mean we are hitting the CNF offchutes you were talking about? Lol

Sure, I gotta test it right! I check the sign at the fire station every day when I go by, but they are quick to close and slow to open! Once Colleen and I finish preparing for Christmas we'll do a run into the CNF, even if we have to go through Black Star canyon.

Also, you are always welcome to join us on any digs we do. I'll try and post in advance. Our problem is we are trying to schedule around weather, my schedule, Colleen's schedule and sometimes Aaron's schedule so we don't know were going until we get into the truck!

Glad you got things taken care of and that GM stepped up.

I don't know if the forum software can do what you suggest (Alex or Craig might now better) so I think a better approach is to always keep cell phone numbers for a couple of local forum members handy, especially when you are going the sat phone route.

I, for one, am always willing to help a fellow forum member out if I'm around and if my truck is up and running.

Maybe we should somehow maintain a list of members who are willing to help recover other forum members as well as the approximate area we could cover. I don't know if posting that type of information on the forum is a good idea given that all posts are visible to the public but I'm sure we could find a workable solution.

Ditto! Mikkel helped rescue me when I broke a tierod 2:00 in the morning. I will be more than glad to pay it forward when I can.

I'd be willing to rescue anyone that is stuck in my area provided I'm available and and my truck is operable. I wonder if I could tow an H1 or an H2 though? Probably if we went slow and stayed in 4 low lock, but I might need to use the winch on really rough terrain.

Finding some way to automate the SOS call would be a big help though. You could run up a big satellite bill before you found someone that was ready, willing and able.

I always carry a SPOT messenger in my truck for this type of scenario. It sends a text message with a short message and my GPS coordinates to a pre-determined list of cell phones.

I know some will say that I'm a broken record, but a cheaper alternative to sat phones is HAM radio. As long as you can hit a repeater near by then you stand a pretty good chance of getting in touch with someone. SAT phones undoubtedly will be a better option if you are *really* out in the middle of nowhere, but at least in most of the southwestern US there is a good chance that you could hit a nearby repeater from a mobile (not hand held) HAM UHF / VHF radio

I have been contemplating a HAM...I need to research on it as I am a bit confused on how they work and more importantly how you can contact someone if they are not on...

If you are near a repeater and get someones attention do you then have that random person call for help?

Chris that's pretty much the deal, yes. Most repeaters will have HAM'S who just listen and who are likely to call you back if you need help. At that point it will be a matter of politely asking them to, for example, call AAA or a friend of yours. Many repeaters also have what's called an autopatch which means you can dial a phone number from your radio.
