San Antonio area questions

We are heading to San Antonio for a surgery for my son March 16th, 17th, and 18th. It is the fifth and hopefully last surgery in a series. The last several were at Miami Children's Hospital, mostly for convenience, but also with a good Dr, but after four surgeries I expected to be done, so this time we are changing Dr's and seeing one of the best Dr's in the country who treat Microtia. We will be near the Huebner Road and Loop 1604 (Anderson Loop) intersection and will be staying somewhere in the immediate vicinity. We have an appointment with the Doc in the morning, but it looks like we will have some down time after that on March 16th before the surgery on the 17th and was hoping to squeeze in a few cool things for my son to see and do to ease the anxiety of surgery.

I think we are only about 30 mins from The Alamo, so that is a given, but what else can we squeeze in before the end of the day that would be interesting for my 11 year on son. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Cool, it looks like the Museums and the Zoo are all near each other, so that might be a good way to kill the afternoon and the Caverns look interesting if we can find the time. Sea World, is a no-go, we live near Orlando, and have annual passes to Sea World and free friend/family admission to the other theme parks, so we get our fill of those and try to avoid them at all cost if possible. LOL. Thanks.

Hi there. Ill name off some things, Sea World, Fiesta Texas. San Antonio Zoo. There is Natural bridge caverns where you walk through caves, and has Natural Bridge Wildlife ranch connected to it where you feed animals out of your vehicle, like zebras, and ostriches, and antelope type animals. You have the San Antonio Aquarium which my 5 year old son loves because you get to feed animals like stingrays and iquanas and birds, and it has a giant room with a bunch of moon bounces like slides and obstacle courses. I have heard from a bunch of people about ZDTs amusement park being really fun for kids, I personally haven't been there with my boy. If he likes video games we have a Dave and Busters which is a lot of fun too. If you have any other questions feel free to ask me, and if I think of anything else ill let you know.

The Zoo is very good if you have time. I've never made it there but the Buckhorn Museum is supposed to be fun. Natural Bridge Caverns is in the opposite direction but it and the wildlife park there are worth seeing and while you are there check out New Braunfels / Gruene. It a cool old German town. Tons of cool stuff to do, you should probably plan on staying a few extra days. You probably know that is during spring break, but it is also "Texas Week". There will be a lot of people in, and passing through, San Antonio so be prepared.

We hope all goes well for your son.

We decided to stay near the Riverwalk so we have something easy to get to if my son is not up to moving around much and we will have to play it by ear to see how much time we have to squeeze things in. Thanks for your responses, I appreciate it.

If you have not been warned already, stay away from I-35 on holidays and especially spring break weekends. A 3.5 hr drive to Dallas doubled and I even broke away to a couple of side roads. ALL of I-35 gets affected.

If you haven't been, there is a Bass Pro on the NE side of town and about 30-40 minutes from there in Buda (pronounced Byoo duh) is a big Cabelas. Fredericksburg has the Chester Nimitz museum of the pacific, and then there is Enchanted Rock 35 minutes north of there on 16N. I know these are all decent drives, but they are pretty good spots to visit if you have the time.
