What a long ass night. Got to eagle lakes road exit which is right by fordyce. We couldn't find the campspot with campers Bebe and Rick were talking about but at 130 in the morning we found a spot and setup camp. The sane people would have stopped at rubicon springs around 5 when we got there and finish the rest of it in the morning but either way it was a BLAST!

Unbelievable trail and unbelievable camping and scenery. It's a must do trail for everyone. It has a lot of variety as well. One minute you climbing ledges in a granite bowl and you feel like you in Moab, then big rocks, even with the drought so water crossings. Just amazing...

Best of all the line choices are awesome. there is stuff you can't touch at all the way down to something easier.

One day........

If it were up to me it would be every day :)

I bought some property in Robb's Valley near the Rubicon.

It's going to make the perfect outpost :) Camping only, but 9 miles from the Rubicon Trail Head and 12 miles from the Barrett Lake Trail head. 150 acres of Trees. Perfect Base Camp for multiple trails :)

On our way home hit fordyce and blew my front R&P on my 44 wasn't even on the gas hard pulled the driveshaft unlocked the hubs and am driving home. One of the best wheeling trips I've had.

I think the R&P blew because I had a leak in the diff and I lost fluid causing the bearing to dry up or the pinion preload issue. Since day 1 I had issues with it and I believe it was due to improper install from the guy I bought axle from so I can fix the 44, do a jantz k4 upgrade with a bigger R&P in my 44 or Dana 60 but I feel ill probably fix it because I know the 44 didn't break due to abuse. Either way I
Am still happy I had an epic trip and squeaky kicked absolute ass taking hardlines every time minus soup bowl

thank you! Now that I am home and its 345 in the morning and for some reason I cant sleep I might as well start my story.

TUESDAY 7/14
We left around 8AM to get to bebes place around 330 in the afternoon. The drive was uneventful and the 400 miles went pretty quick. Next thing you know we get to bebe's and seeing her H3 in person was very cool! It was really awesome to get some pictures of Squeaky and the bebemonster because they were 2 totally different approaches to solving the same problem, a weak front end. We went into the trip with no real set plans, we had plenty of time and whatever happened would happen. I felt it was best this way. Our plan was to either stay the night at bebe's or continue to the rubicon that night. I was fine with whatever we did but my buddy Kyle was pushing to leave that night, so we did. First he unloaded his jeep off the trailer, my brother and I ditched the doors, and Rick and bebe were nice enough to lend me their rear half doors to keep all the crap in the trunk. We cooked up the food as the ice melted away on our drive up...we had to cook what we brought for the trail days before it went bad. So we did that, hung out caught up with Rick and Bebe and they gave us the rundown, what to say on the HAM if we run into trouble, GPS coordinates, where to buy more food for the rubicon, and everything we needed to know.

So we head out stop to grab food and are on our way to the rubicon. As we head down the winding road Kyle's suitcase fly's out of the jeep. My brother thought he heard something fall out but decides to not say anything :gaah: so a few miles later Kyle realizes its gone and then we back track...Sure enough his suitcase is long gone and probably fell off the road and down the ledge so of course hes bummed out but luckily my brother and I had extra clothes to lend him. (I made sure he wore a HUMMER shirt one day just because he has a jeep :)) So after looking for the suitcase we continue our drive and get to the rubicon trail sign at 1:56 AM. We drive in a tad and setup camp.

WEDNESDAY 7/15
We all slept in till around 9 because we didnt get camp setup till around 230AM. So we pack up our stuff and get to the start of the rubicon!!!! We air down drop it in 4low and begin our adventure. We drop in from loon lake and hit the beginning obstacles like gatekeeper and some other small ones but then there is the first major obstacle. You can hang left and hit the obstacle or go right and bypass it. Rick warned us about this obstacle because he has seen it ruin more peoples weekends and rigs then any other spot and to boot its literally less then a mile in so breaking there is a total buzzkill. We looked at it and remembered what Rick said but we really wanted to try it so we promised we hit the obstacle and we take it easy, we have a long road ahead of us so we each get a few tries and the second your not getting traction you stop and reevaluate or take the bypass. Kyle hits it first and makes it, then I hit it, my front locker wasnt engaging at all. (I installed a new ox locker cable before the trip and found it to be out of adjustment) so with no front locker I couldnt get traction control to grip and get over so I played it safe and took the bypass. My brother then hits the obstacle and makes it. We continue on the trail and all is well. Later on we stop for lunch and I get to work on adjusting the ox locker cable, once its adjusted properly your good and you never have to touch it again, after the v8 swap my exhaust hit the cable and burned it so I ordered a new one thought I had it adjusted and it wasnt. So I get it adjusted while Nick and kyle are enjoying their lunch, We ran into about 3 rigs during lunch and 2 guys walking. The guys walking stopped to say hello and one of them had a steering box in their backpack. They broke the weekend before and had to walk out and get a new box. We offered them a ride but they said they were already almost to the rig. So I quickly ate, packed up and we were on our way, now with all of us having functioning front and rear lockers. We noticed right away that the trail is VERY line dependent. So one guy can go in and have a totally different experience with the trail then the next. Which is nice, the trail is so beautiful and allowing a number of different rigs through just to experience the trail is awesome. Either way we continue on, we find soup bowl which is a GNARLY obstacle. One day I would love to try it but not before I have a cage and an experienced spotter who knows the line for the soup bowl.

At this point we havent seen anyone for hours now realizing how much beautiful land their is that is basically all to ourselves and with no cell phone service and being in your own rig it really is like therapy, clears your mind, lets you think about life, it was just awesome. We hit little sluice and decided to go for it. In the past it was definitely an obstacle we could not do but they blew it up. Is it easier? yes! Is it still a good challenge? Yes...So we all get through little sluice and we continue on trying to take every hardline their is and if its no doable back up and hit another line. Kyle tried this one super tough line got tippy and I had to go around him get squeaky up top to winch his front end down. Thats whats cool about the trail you pick your difficulty. He could have taken a much easier line but you can really push yourself. We all pushed ourselves and it was cool to do it because I could start to relearn squeaky's new limitations. So sure enough as we continue on its about 7pm and we hit this one spot thats beautiful. Were on top of this granite spot that is perfect for a tent, a big granite wall behind us, overlooking the entire canyon and to your right there is buck island lake. So we stop there setup camp have dinner, hang out and head to bed. It was a long day and it would continue on tomorrow.

THURSDAY 7/16
Thursday I wake up first around 7-730 and get up to enjoy the view, With Nick and Kyle still asleep and no one around I have never heard such silence in my life, half the problem is I dont allow silence since I always am talking but it was nice to just sit back and enjoy the peace. Thats also what makes the trail so awesome and running it midweek you have the trail to yourself. It is one of the most peaceful things you can do...So then I wake them up a little bit later and we have breakfast and start packing up our stuff when we here some engines. Nick runs out about 500 feet to see 2 jeeps and a land cruiser coming up the hill. All of a sudden he yells HOLY **** ROLLOVER!!! We run down the hill and quickly check on them. The guys were ok luckily and the land cruiser could have been MUCH worse then it was. So we start stacking rocks, pulling winch cable and helping out. Sure enough they were from Ventura, not too far from us back in so cal. They turned around because they said the trail continued to get worse. So we pack up our stuff and continue on. We eventually hit a few tough optional spots, where I got my hi lift ripped off the mounts by a tree but it was a BADASS climb and squeaky made it look relatively easy, tough enough where my brother had to winch up, which we all had do a few times but it was mainly on the the optional lines we took. So we get to buck island lake and decide to jump in. At this point hitting water was nice and refreshing. We had lunch by the lake and rafted/swam to the island and just enjoyed the beauty that the rubicon had to offer. Later on we head down big sluice where the boulders are literally the size of a VW bug and eventually we hit rubicon springs. We cruised by the springs without stopping around 5 pm. We wanted to finish. Eventually we hit cadillac hill. Its BADASS, gnarly and awesome all at the same time. Its narrow and has a 900 foot drop off an H1 could fit with no problem but with that said there isnt much room to let others pass. We get up cadillac hill and hit observation point and have dinner up there around 630. We continue on and finally finish the trail around 930. Due to construction in lake tahoe we had to sit a while waiting for the pilot car to drive us through. We finally gas up. Call up Rick and bebe let them know were not dead, call family and friends let them know the same and then we decided to push on and camp at the trailhead of fordyce so we have another hour of driving we get there at 130AM setup camp and knock out. Fordyce is halfway between the end of the rubicon and Rick & bebes house.

FRIDAY 7/17
So the next morning I heard some noise from the front end pull the driveshaft and then go back to bebes. Rick and bebe had their webilt 4wd club camping/wheeling weekend at fordyce so we left with them friday night but during the day we cleaned up our rigs, put the doors back on grabbed the truck and trailer for kyle then went down to ruffstuff specialties to check out their place. Nick, Kyle and myself all have a ton of ruffstuff bling on our rigs. They sell DIY builder brackets and a bunch of other stuff. I have my spring over brackets from them, build my steering with their builder kit. control arm brackets for the SAS, trackbar brackets, etc. THEY WERE SUPER COOL! I was a lifetime customer before and even more so after we met them. Friday night we head back up to fordyce and hang out with the webilt club and realized I left my u bolt straps for the driveshaft at camp this morning! I head back and only find one of two. Luckily a call to one of Rick and bebes friends he brought some up the next morning. So the rest of the night we hangout by fire and relax

SATURDAY 7/18
The next morning I get my parts, reinstall the driveshaft and we hit up fordyce, we get to driveline hill, all made it up but heard a noise, we continue on and sure enough BANG front diff done, I then realized I had a massive diff fluid leak and tomorrow when I crack the cover if I had less then a quart of fluid I can gaurentee the failure was not due to driving style, abuse, or a real failure but more so me being a dumbass letting the bearings go dry and fail allowing deflection of the gears. :gaah: Luckily with the dana 44 you unlock the hubs pull the driveshaft and drive home in 4 hi lock so thats what we did. We get about half way home and it looks like we have a storm coming at us. Nick has no top on his jeep so we grab the tarp we used for our tent and ratchet strapped that in a parking lot for a makeshift roof and it worked!! Rained like hell but he was dry.

So all in all I drove 1,119.5 miles in my first V8 swap adventure and if 5 years ago you told me that you could reliably drive a v8 swapped SASed H3, no trailer and beat it up on the rubicon, part of fordyce and drive it home I would say your lying but I was happy to say I did it and confidence in reliability is restored. My ability to make sure I have diff fluid is not restored but o well. I made it home no trailers no tow truck.

It was an AWESOME TRIP! I will be back to hit fordyce, barrett lake and the dusy one day the rubicon FOR SURE! I cant not thank Rick and bebe enough for the hospitality and making us feel welcome. They have an awesome place and its a great spot for a blacksheep week NOR CAL edition. I would love to get a group to run the rubicon, bebe lead I tail gun and get some hummers through!

Lastly, the people are so much friendlier in that area compared to socal....Anyways its now 5 am I gotta catch some sleep before work. Not sure why I woke up at 3 and couldnt fall back to sleep, pics are uploaded and will be posted tomorrow and start getting video up.

Seems like u guys had more difficult experience (not counting my breakdown). You say winch, I say whaaat? Backed up couple of times yes but winch is no-no. But I was concentrating on road a-lot so beauty of that place kind of passed me by. It was a-lot better to enjoy it during my recovery (well recovering someone else).

HAha! Yeah - 40's help a lot on that trail. Or 30's on a rzr :)

Its only 1.5" difference. And John was on 37". Probably weather makes a-lot of difference too, it was overcast and rain on and off.

Size matters, my friend.:giggle:

I think the largest tire in this group was a metric 37.

I think they did really well for their first trip. I'm happy for them! I can't wait for them to come back, and anyone else who wants to join in. H1's 2 's and 3's.

After Labor day weekend is best for me (summer is too busy work-wise).

I guarantee you'll love it.

Serge if we took bypasses I'm sure we wouldn't have pulled cable we tried every tough line first but hey, I was out there to have fun not play who's is bigger and better.

Poncho I would say 35s experienced driver 4:1 rear locker I would ask Bebe though I tackled the trail after I was modified. She ran it closer to stock so she knows better

As far as rig specs:

H1 - Sliders, locked rear, under carriage protection, winch, spare parts

H2- 37's, GOOD sliders, locked rear, GOOD under carriage protection, winch, spare parts

H3's - 35's, GOOD sliders, locked rear, 4:1 transfer case, GOOD under carriage protection, winch, spare parts

Plan on body damage and broken parts, be happy when there is none :)

Lift, 35", winch, front end parts spares.

I agree. Maybe 33" on SUV, but 35" on truck with longer wheelbase.
I have decided to build mine to do Rubicon. Which would include gobs of armor, locker in rear and limited slip in front and steel drive lines. I think then I would be ready.
I will not take my H3T on Fordyce. That is the toughest trail I've ever been on. I have not done the Dusy yet, but it's 30 miles long, and chicken hill is legendary difficult.

Sounds like you guys had a great time. Glad you made it home ok.

If you plan another NorCal trip, I would love to tag along.

Can't make it through the day? Back up, and get a run at it!
