A rattling noise just started the other day and only happens on an acceleration from a stop. Sound like is coming from the front passenger side tire area...I haven't found anything loose. CV going bad???

I5 or V8? The I5 has an aluminum heat shield over the exhaust that over time will rattle loose. Took me 6 months to find it and then I just pulled it all the way off and never heard it again.

Did it rattle all the time??? The only time I have the noise is on a hard acceleration from a stop...no other time...

Heat shield rattle is often tied to RPM. My Alpha had it at about 1500rpm; an exhaust heat shield had cracked and was subsequently loose. Yours could be a combination of RPM and engine twist during acceleration.

Hawk brings up a good point - if you have a vibration under acceleration you could have one or two bad motor mounts. The passenger one in particular is prone to tearing. Under acceleration the engine will move and get two surfaces to start hitting each other.

I had a combo rattle on mine.

The first was the heatshield which the dealer wants $850 to fix (some sort of ****ing vibration dampener).

The second was a horrible rattle when going into low speed turns, both directions.

I swear it sounded like a damn hub or diff going out.

Loud enough to make people look.

Interestingly enough, it started right after some recent dealer service.

I gave them truck back, which they had for 2 weeks to diag, only to blame the noise on the tires and wheels.

Said the noise went away completely when they put on regular factory tires and wheels.

I called bull**** and gave them back the Caddy CTS I had been driving for a loaner (which I absolutely ****ing loved BTW).

Get the ****er home, almost put my factory take-offs back on but decided to check the drivetrain one more time.

Get under the truck, look up and what the **** do I see……Yep, 2 god damned skid plate bolts with about ¼ inch of thread showing.

Bolts will not tighten up, guess they cross threaded them when putting the skid back on.

Dropped the skid, left it off completely, road tested and guess what?

Need to chase the threads and re-mount the skid….All should be good.

Apparently, when turning, the outside lugs on my 35’s created just enough vibration to rattle the **** out of that skid.

Needless to say, their street tires did not have that issue, so no noise.

That one made me mad at both the dealer AND myself.

At least that problem is all fixed now.

However, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to fix/remove that damn heat shield.

I can see it, can beat on it with a small hammer, pry on it, all sorts of ****…..It “seems” solid.

But no…..same damn vibration noise between 1k and 1.5k RPM.

Just suffering with it till the weather cools off a bit then will investigate further.

I guess it is more of a rattling is more like a clunking...i can feel it...will check to see if brake pads are sticking ...maybe CV joint...will check the motor mounts as well...

Could be a worn crossmember bushing.

Both CV joints swapped out...same noise...noticed cross member bushing was shredded on the bottom...it looks like it is missing something...could not find at parts geek...anywhere else I might be able to get one??? Is it as simple as pulling 4 bolts and dropping the crossmember???

This is from another members photo...exactly what mine looks like...could this be the source of the popping popping while under acceleration and turning???

Usually the diff mount noise is strong, less from turning and more from torque applied or unapplied from the engine. When torque is applied, or released, if that bushing is broken then the diff will slam against the crossmember.

I only get the clanking/popping under torquing conditions...perfectly smooth on the highway...

Outfitter Design makes a bushing kit. Scorpworks has a crossmember exchange deal. Both can be found in the Sponsor section.

Outfitter design sells the bushing kit that you can instal yourself. The dealer doesn't provide the bushing only, it comes as part of the crossmember assembly.
I have the O.D. kit and it solved my problem.

Well both CV joints replaced and repaired the cross member differential and I still have the popping under torque...I think it's time to take it in...I'm getting past my automotive skills...

When mine started doing that popping under torque, it was because the upper A arm bolts were loose.

Every rattling noise I've had, which has been quite a few, went away after hours of laying under the truck scratching my head looking for things could be loose. Most of the time, those heat shields are the problem and replacing the metal zip tie things does the trick!

Do you mean driveshaft CVs or axle CVs?
