Planning for the Hummers future

So a question, 5 or more years from now are you planning to keep your hummer in its original form and keep or sell it as a collectors item or to mod the hell out of it and replace the OEM parts and structures (think SAS, etc) in order to use more common after market parts and keep riding and wheeling the truck? Very different approaches as we see a wind down of available parts.

Or does anyone really think it matters a hoot because these are not Z28s or Mustangs

I think some hummers will be collectors trucks and some won't be. the more desirable ones will be modded, driving up their value. H3T alpha adv pack, for example. Most special H2's are appearance packages so they'll probably stay stock except for wheels or stick on chrome parts. I imagine the wheeled 2's are just normal factory ones. H1 alphas are already being collected. The older H1s (I forget the goldilocks year) are modded and wheeled heavily.

It matters...if you have the passion to keep the line alive whether it's Z28, Mustang, Beettle, Jeep CJ, Suzuki Samurai, a Thing, HUMMER, etc.

The way I see it, 5 years from now, my rigs will only be 11 years old and I think and hope that I can keep them running way beyond that time. Also, the way I see it, I have the passion to keep mine running rather than ditch them, but that's just me. Also, IMO, we have a great core group of HUMMER owners on this forum who share that passion and in my opinion, are true innovators with great ideas on how to keep these rigs going. That is what distinguishes this forum from all the rest. I plan to keep 1 rig to wheel and mod the hell after, 1 to keep and sell someday as a collector vehicle and 1 to use for donor parts...and who knows, I may continue to buy more. I also have a decent supply of spare parts in my garage and always looking to add more just for that day when parts may be harder and more expensive to find.

BTW, great thread Mr. Flips!

I plan to keep mine until it falls a part...or until it is my time to embark into the the after life. Plan on modding it accordingly, depend on new technologies and what nots...in 10-20 years from now, most likely the only thing that will remain hummer would be the body itself...as technology advances and improves so will my hummer.

I plan to keep it and mod the hell out of it! Definitely so I can stand out from all the rest of the trucks in my area plus I have tons of memories with it.

My H2 will stay with me for quite some time with the occasional mod here and there, my sons and I love to tinker so it will continue to be a great way for us to spend time together, as well as continuing to use it to enjoy the outdoors. As far as value is concerned, I have no fascination with restoring it and keeping it as a collector vehicle, so I could care less what the value is today, tomorrow or several years from now. One day, hopefully I can hand it down to one of my boys so they can share some adventures with their kids, but I am sure by that time, she will look nothing like she does in her current state. I'd like to say she would have a SAS by then, but I have a hard time convincing myself the work is worth the reward for the type and style of wheeling we do. Of course my crystal ball is pretty cloudy these days, so all of that could certainly change depending on what the future has in store for us.

The H3 is the modern equivalent of the Edsel...DeLorian...or Yugo. I don't think any of them will ever be noteworthy.
H3's are groundbreaking. They have nice ergonomics. They have nice road manners. But way too flimsy and poorly engineered to be a hard core wheeler. It's a great platform to build on....full frame...v8...great brakes. Fire up the torch...start cuttin!

I think it will be another 20 or 25 years before these are looked at as collectable. The ones that will be collectable will be the stock ones with the Alpha being the big one. The ones that have had the SAS or other big mods will be higher priced but also heavily used offroad so they would be priced like any other trail rig. Low miles, stock, cream puffs will be the cars to have.

I'm pretty sure I'm keeping mine for a long time. The irony is that even though it's paid off, at 150,000 miles and some visible wear and tear, it just doesn't have much resale value. If I keep it I'll have to drop in a new 3.7 at some point.

Keeping mine as well. Slowly tinkering away and wheeling it whenever I may... I will continue to upgrade it in anyway that I can. It has 133k and still runs like a champ..

We plan on keeping ours for the long haul. when I return from Bagram this time we are buying a car so the 3 can be retired from a DD to a weekend warrior.. It just rolled 65k miles, the rear has already been SOA and a SAS is in its near future.

I was looking through different hummer forums recently, going all the way back to 03 & the topics/discussions are very "interesting."

It seems as if most of the "bling" crowd is gone or has entirely died off. People are still making their rigs look great, but chrome is dead. This is great. I don't mind seeing 20s/22s/24s on a hummer, but it just depends on the tires. Some are done really, really well. Others, well, they make me vomit. Forums have changed from "how can I pimp my ride" to "how do I fix ____" or "I'm doing a rebuid of ____". Good times.

Many people "moved" on as newer vehicles came out. I won't say bigger & better. We know where we stand. ;)
For us, this is probably for the better. At least we know people who still on Hummers are pretty much dedicated to the brand.

You still have some DD/Pavement pounders on forums (I'm mostly in that category, for now), but they aren't being pushed as bling machines.
As a lot of people have mentioned, there's a complete overhual being done on existing H2s/H3s by here on H4O & simliar sites. I think the value will climb. Hummerguy made a post in 2014 about the value of Hummers. H2s & H3s have retained more of their MSRP than any other vehicle on the road & are in the top 3 of their respective used car categories. H1s sell for a ton (the H1 alpha are at least as expensive as they were back in 2006) & I'm seeing lots of low mileage H2s (2008/2009) being listed for over MSRP.

I've own an 03 H2 (still miss it) & now a 2009 H2 & a 2008 H3 Alpha. Both are kick ass. These have been the first two vehicles I've ever worked on & I can say that makes me proud. These are super easy to work on compared to other vehicles. The H2 is going to get a diesel in the future (just have to decide between an LMM & LML) & I'm waiting to see if anyone starts transplanting the 2.8L duramax into H3s. Otherwise, I'm just upgrading suspensions on both vehicles & keeping them in good shape. I don't plan on getting rid of them.

I plan to keep mine till the wheels fall off, then I'll put new ones on and keep going. A 5.3 swap will be in the future too.
I also see myself getting a second one within 5yrs a T or if the stars align, an H1.

Edit: Didn't mean to revive a dead thread. Sorry y'all.
