Glad you are going to make it skinner. I have not stayed at the Bowen Hotel. I usually stay at Motel 6. A few of the trails require a permit but they are only like $5/ day.

I would make every effort I could to get there and stay all week, if it weren't the same week for my midterms (and finals for my accelerated classes) because I know my teachers are not nice enough to move test dates around!

Ahhhh! Oh well I will be there in April as long as its not finals week like last trip!

We are planning on going. Will be our first time with the Black Sheep. Sounds like a great group.Is there any BLM permits needed? Has anyone stayed at the Bowen Motel?

Never heard anything bad about it, puts you right in downtown Moab.
Only time BLM requires permits is if a group is larger than 25 vehicles or someone is being paid to lead the organized group. BS have never had a group over 25 or paid for someone to lead. If you do Hell's Revenge, Fins and Things or Baby Lion's Back, you are charged an entrance fee by Sand Flats, which is a Grand County Park. However, if you just drive through Sand Flats, without stopping, you do not have to pay the fee.

First Sunday warm-up trail?
Might be a great year to do the polar mesa trail since the nearest snow is in Montana, and don't believe any of the roads will be closed due to snowfall. It should be different, a combination of desert and higher elevation up to Polar Mesa. Anyone interested?

However, understand, it is about .7 miles long and takes over four hours to run and damage is almost guaranteed. Seven vehicles a day are allowed to run the trail and only on Friday and Saturday. So far, all dates in Oct are available. And, they must be rock crawlers; no standard vehicles allowed.

Need at last two vehicles, so one can tow the other out and that is very likely. Talked with some Friends from Wheeling wheelers who ran coyote the day it re-opened, and they clearly stated it makes Pritchett look like a trail for wimps. But come on out, get another vehicle to run it, and I'll get the permits (as long as the dates are still open). I would love to take some photos....

Here's a statement about disabled vehicles:
Provision for Disabled Vehicles

A reasonable attempt must be made on the day of registered use to move
disabled vehicles to the entrance of Coyote Canyon on the Black Ridge Road.
Disabled vehicles may remain at the Coyote/Black Ridge Road intersection for up
to 48 hours. If a vehicle cannot be moved to the Black Ridge Road, registrants
must move the vehicle so that Coyote Canyon is not blocked. Do not leave
disabled vehicles in front of the entry gate. If registrants cannot remove the
vehicle on the day of their trip, they may return the following day to retrieve
the vehicle. The trip leader must call the MFO on the first business day
following the vehicle retrieval to inform the BLM of the additional entry into
Coyote Canyon. All use of Coyote Canyon must cease by 5 p.m., including attempts
to remove disabled vehicles.

Just pondering, how many trails can a stock truck probably take in the normal "run" list (knowing I'm not afraid of body damage)? Starting to wonder if I can keep up on any of it...

abearden, every trail we run isn't a truck killer. In fact most aren't that likely to cause body damage even though it can occur. We do a real good job of keeping people from hurting their trucks. That said breakage is possible on every trail. We also usually split into multiple groups on the days when the hardest trails are run so people have a choice to run something they are more comfortable on. You will get great spotting on every trail we run.

Okay, great. Just looking down the list of trails that have been run and seeing them rated 7 out of 10 made me wonder. Eventually I want to run 7s and 8s, but the truck isn't there yet. Guess I should get to ordering some spares.

After watching a couple of videos I can say with a high degree of certainty that we won't be running Coyote Canyon.

The trail guys at BLM say that from their estimate and the information received from the two main clubs in town (Red Rocks 4-wheelers and Friends for Wheeling) and my talks with one of the execs of Friends for Wheeling, your chances of being towed out of Coyote Canyon is about 70 percent, and damage to a vehicle is about 90 percent. To give a small history....
When the RMP was being developed by the BLM Moab office, they had months and months of meeting with both counties and all major four wheeling clubs from Moab to SLC, to Colorado and the list of existing trails were given and setup. However, NO ONE mentioned Coyote Canyon, so the trail was closed. And the guys who posted the sign could not believe it was a 4 wheeling road when they posted the sign.

And no one noticed it was closed for over a year. Then the Friends for Wheeling and Red Rock submitted a request to re-open and the oop: hit the fan. The guy who checked it out for BLM had no problem opening it, could not believe anyone would run it and submitted a proposal to accept a re-opening of the trail. Then the property owners nearby came into and bitched and bitched to the point one (the infamous woman, Kiley Miller - I happen to have a nude photo of her :thumbs:for those interested in Oct - who said all 4-wheelers are terrorists) actually wrote Obama. (Good thing he didn't get involved or else there would have been a solar panel factory built in the canyon.) However, Saliszar got involved so did the state director, and then the Hunters got involved and even a private property owner who already had a bunch of 4-wheel trails nearby on private land. (Hunter were involved since this was a birthing area for deer or elk or both; thus why it is closed in the winter.)

The agreement was finally worked out to require permits (FREE), max of seven vehicles and only run on Friday and Saturday. When it first opened, there was (surprise to all) a line up to run the canyon; thus a waiting period. After the intitial runs, it has slowed down quite a bit. Expected to be heavy traffic in the spring due to Jeep week.

Not really sure if there are any H3s that could run it. Possibly Bebe's from my knowledge. Not sure if it would be friendly to H1s due to size consideration.

But I do have a new camera and I'm willing to take photos of anyone wanting to try the course. This fall when it cools down, I'm going to walk it with the pouch just to see what it is like.

abearden, caution is good but, like 3Hummers said, we won't put you into a situation that is likely to abuse your vehicle. I ran Moab many times w/o a rear locker and w/o a 4:1 case. Much of that was on BFG A/Ts. Others have run the trails without UCP and/or rock rails. You don't need a "built" rig to have one or several successful trips to Moab.

Motel 6 is a nice and cheap place to stay. I think ours was around 50-60 dollars a night.
