I would bring in doughnuts for the mechanics an the service guy. And have them take a good look at that used motor. If they say it will be covered get it in black an white for your records. You might want to check the vin. # to see where it came from, carfax it

Considering a new engine installed is probably $7000+, I think I'm on the same page as Luis, assuming you've got the funds. I do agree that you're fine either way but that $2300 seems like a pretty good deal.

Yeah, the service guy quoted me just over $7000 to have them replace the motor with a GM crate engine. $2300 is a good deal, but it'd drain our reserves and it'd take us a while to build that back up, that or we'd have to put off paying down our credit cards a couple months. I think as long as the replacement motor is covered for the remainder of my warranty, it's an acceptable offer. Still have to wait to talk to the warranty company first though, and then see what I can find out about the replacement motor as well.

For sure it's a good thing. I'm waiting to hear back about a third option, paying a little extra for a reman engine. While a brand new one would be nice, I would rather not have to fork out even the $2300 for it. But if I could get a reman for maybe less than $1000 extra, that might be the route I'll take.

I did talk with the warranty company though and the used engine would still be covered under the remainder of my warranty, so even if I did manage to end up with another blown motor it'd be covered.

So it turns out the warranty company was not able to source a reman engine, and looking around either no one has any or they're still going to cost me about $2K extra. So I'm just going to go with the used engine. Apparently it's being sourced from LKQ and has 78K miles on it, and LKQ will also provide their own 12 month 12,000 mile warranty, so I'll be double covered for the first year. I looked up their inventory and they have a couple engines matching that description from a couple Colorado's (a 2011 and 2012). They're both supposedly out of 4x2's though, so I'm not sure if they'll have to swap over my oil pan or not. But it shouldn't be a problem I think overall.

No idea. I'm hoping it'll only be a couple weeks more, but it all depends on how soon the warranty company can get the engine to the dealer, and then how long it takes the dealer to swap them.

Update:

Dealership called this morning, they've got most everything swapped over from the old engine to the replacement, so they are very nearly finished. They did find that my exhaust manifold was cracked though. Fortunately the warranty company is going to cover the replacement of that as well, and they also agreed to pay for a brand new GM replacement. Apparently they wanted to go with a used one, but the guy at the dealership was able to convince them to pay for a new one. So they are waiting for that to come in from Denver. He thinks that as long as they don't have any other issues they should be finished by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. All I will have to pay for is my $100 deductible for the warranty, the cost of oil/coolant, and some exhaust manifold bolts. So maybe a couple hundred total or so.

It's sucked being without my H3 for over a month, but I'm glad I'm getting out so darn cheap, and it sounds like I'm going to be in better shape than I was before as well. Hopefully nothing else is wrong, and if it is, the warranty will cover it.

Might not change it that often, but when I was looking over my warranty it does say that if the manufacturer doesn't have a mileage based interval (like the H3 that relies on the PCM to tell you when to change it) you have to change the oil at least every 6000 miles to keep being covered. Which is no big deal to me really, that's still only about twice a year or so I'd need to change it.

I'm definitely going to check my fluids every time I fill up going forward. I used to be good at that years ago when I first started driving.

I'm still planning on getting an oil pressure and temperature gauge, as well as getting the Ultragauge MX to keep an eye on everything else, including my transmission oil temperature. Oh, and a vacuum gauge as well. Then I should be pretty well set on keeping an eye on everything so that I can spot problems before they cause any real issues.

Kinda sucks having to drop all that money on it, but after this I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Possibly? What does your owners manual say about oil change intervals? I know mine which is an 08 doesn't have a mileage interval for the oil, it uses an oil life calculation. Maybe the 3.5 engines still had mileage based intervals?

Interesting... mine has never said a peep about oil ever. I'll check the manual when I get it back. Its in the glove box... at the dealer. But I would assume my 3.7L would be the same as the other years.

I've already used them twice before for stuff, once to replace the radiator only a week or two after I bought the H3, and another time earlier this year to replace tie rods (that didn't really need replacing, but hey, now I have spares). I haven't had any weird surprises, and they've been really good at communicating with me on this whole ordeal. If i ever got another warranty on a car I'd be inclined to make sure it was through them. It's through Alpha Warranty, I have the A+ one which gives me the most coverage.

My Alpha supposedly has the oil life monitor, but I have yet to see it. I tried to use the procedure in the manual to reset it, but it won't complete the reset. I changed my oil after about 5,000 miles (it already had 98K when I bought it), and am now at about 5,500 since them; still no monitor notice.
With the high mileage and the fact that I can't seem to reset it, I'm too nervous to rely on the monitor, and will instead just do it on a mileage basis.

I've seen the change oil message come up on my alpha a couple times. But I change my oil every 3k miles. I think that oil life thing is bs.
