Hummer Hate

Since I've owned this for almost a month now.. I've come to realize that a lot of people are not fans of Hummers.. esp. Jeep people. When I was in the Diesel world, there were some idiots who were brand loyal.. but most of the time it was just truck enthusiasts enjoying each others company/stories/builds/etc.. But good lord.. on a daily basis people make comments about it.. "little big man syndrome" "small d%$K" "can't believe you actually bought that thing" etc.. And I just can't figure out WHY anyone WOULDNT want one? It's like riding in a fully off-road capable Cadillac with options that Cadillac doesn't even offer. Just two days ago I had all three kids, wife, and dog in the H2 and was out Baja'ing in about 10-12" of wet snow on my uncles 250 acre hill.. never skipped a beat. I actually almost bought a Wrangler.. but for 30K.. zero power.. zero interior room.. and the fear of a bicycle T boning me and killing me.. I decided not to. It's a shame GM quit making them, because they are quite exceptional. I know there was the whole ordeal of the "gas guzzler" thing, but slap a Dmax in them from factory and you have a 400HP monster with 17-21 MPG capabilities. Sorry for the rant, but the ignorance of people around me is getting old.. everyone thinks they were made specifically to run 28" wheels and cruise the mall.. drives me nuts.

Its Hummers/GMs fault for marketing Hummer the way they did to the yuppy/pimped out big ego market. So I don't think we will outlive the bad rap Hummer gets. You don't seem to be the type of guy that would let that crap get to you. I really don't get much hate at all, sure its a pig, but it was built for a purpose and I use it as such and after over 7 years of ownership, it has always exceeded my expectations, it has always been one of the most versatile vehicles I have ever owned. So they can hate on it all they want, it does have its downsides, as does any vehicle, but they are very few. I'd love to see any other rig outlast the life my Hummer has had and still be in as good a shape and still be a joy to drive as much as the day I bought it.

Yeah, I'm not normally the type of person that it would bother, but it's been non-stop lately.. Right after I posted this I went to do a couple jobs and had two comments in the past hour.. it's crazy. But I also need to realize that I have yet to see or know anyone in this entire area that has an H2 SUT.. so it's gonna get looks. I know of a couple H2 SUVs.. but they are bare bones base models with surf boards attached to the roof.. and let me tell ya.. I live in Central PA.. so I'm not sure what they are doing with them :)

I think two of the best things you can do to change their minds is to wheel it like you stole it, and pull the damn chrome off the thing.

I wasn't a fan of Hummers a long time ago, back in my Jeep Club days, and I'm not ashamed to say it because people that would come to off-road in Hummers, were not exactly making a good name for the brand. When you see all the stupid chrome hanging on the thing, it's inability to flex, and driver's inability climb an obstacle, afraid of getting a scratch, I came to conclusions. My conclusion was that it couldn't off-road, but I was dead wrong, just didn't know it.

I went to Moab a long time ago, had an H2 tow my giant Grand Cherokee there because... get this... we saved gas money by towing my vehicle and splitting the bill of the H2. After that trip, I had said to myself three or five times, "That Hummer is going struggle on this part," but it never did. If anything, it preformed better than most the vehicle there.

That trip set in motion the idea that it was the drivers behind the wheels that couldn't drive the vehicle properly. Then for about a year or two there was this H3 sitting in a used car lot and I had to drive past it twice a day. Despite not liking the Hummer brand back then, I still thought they looked very cool.

To shorten the story up, I realized that with all this time and money I had put into my Grand Cherokee I had built an H3 Hummer when comparing the numbers. Then I wanted vehicle with less miles on it, and I didn't want to have to go through the process of building up another vehicle again. Which is why I eventually got the H3 I have now.

(Don't get me wrong though, that grand Cherokee was on par with the capability of what custom built buggies aspire to do off-road. It could scored 1600 on a RTS ramp.)

A lot of wheelers hated on my 3 all the time but I went out there wheeled it hard learned how to drive better and when people would say sell it for a jeep I made mods to my 3 so I could keep up.

Now that I can do pretty much everything they can do I get a lot of respect.

My point is let people hate all they want and then when they see your rig in action their opinion will change.

I had it de-chromed the first day it was home. Tore the grille off, wheels, etc.. and had everything replaced. And that's the thing.. I spent the past week or so reading reviews from wheeling articles, and they all said the same thing.. "Hummers are more capable than what people think".. Lots of tests all over the country, and Hummer did them all with no problems. And living in Central PA.. it's hard to find decent places to wheel, but I already had er on my uncles property having fun in the snow :) When I was a teenager there were TONS of roads/trails/etc.. now DCNR patrols them all, and the woods is no longer a "FREE" service to man-kind.

Buddy of mine texted me this pic this morning, his wife was in his SUT and she parked across from me and thought highly enough to snap a pic. I'm sure these two SUTs got plenty of looks this morning... Of course mine is the dirtier of the two.. He couldn't make it out with us this weekend.

He also used to get plenty of looks when his SUT had the camo wrap, but he had to remove it because it started peeling pretty bad.

hmmmm... I have a 1983 Chev 4x4 pickup with a 6.2l diesel - my experience is there's as much hate in the diesel world as anywhere else.

I think I lucked out with the Diesel crowd. About three times a year we have meets in Pittsburgh PA.. and in the meantime I've made actual life long friends with a few members. And it was a nice mix of Duramax and Cummins. And even after I bought my H2, they let me stay Admin on the forum and I still go to meets :) But lately Diesel has been getting worse.. they are becoming more affordable for really young kids who just wanna "blow smoke" and "make noise"

If the fact that I drive a Hummer doesn't tell them that I don't give a $hit what other people think clearly enough then nothing I can say will get the message across.

I just wish people would stop asking what kind of gas mileage I get. They already know it can't be good, they just seem to have a need to confirm it.

But if anybody can find me another vehicle that I can haul a 7K trailer to the campground in complete comfort and the kids watching movies on the monitors, drop the trailer, cofrtably and undramatically wheel the hell out of it, rocks, mud it don't matter, then hook the trailer back up and drive out back down the interstate in complete comfort, I'd sure like to know what that vehicle is.
We did a 2000 mile round trip to Canada with the deuce doing exactly what I said above and the truck performed flawlessly pulling trailer duty the entire way. Let's see somebody strap that much trailer on a Cherokee and do the same stuff bone stuck. Can't do it.
People just can't seem to understand that the H2 has many tricks that it can perform extremely well.

When I was looking to trade in my 06 GTO I hit the dealership I always buy from. They had 5-6 H2's. I couldn't stand the 2's and used to talk crap about them all the time. Just for the hell of it I decided to test drive one. I was completely amazed at how it drove, the size, the interior room, basically everything about it. That 2 I test drove I bought the next night and still have it today. I think its pure ignorance.

Actually I have never had a bad comment, everyone who sees it loves it! When people ask me about gas mileage all I tell them is its no worse than a full size suburban and no one talks crap about those!

Currently rolling on 30's here. Thinking of going to 32's with rubber bands for tires. Live in the hood and I swear they are jealous. Have had a few haters and what kind of mileage you get. Had a guy try and sell me some crap at a gas station to cover my scratches. Nice. Applied around the gas door. Had to get another rag to clean it up. He did. Then I asked what about the rest of the truck. I might have some serious trail rash. Go figure. He went to the next person.

I do fine, we start talking about MPG and sudden the noise goes quiet :) Inevitably, someone starts about reliability and I point out that if you're stupid, you shouldn't own a diesel - don't overheat a 6.2 and they last forever. I've got a 283k mile truck 83k with a gale banks turbo. I bought the turbo used from a guy who had 75k miles on his motor with the turbo.... I've had to rebuild the turbo, yet the motor is still chugging strong.

Point is - haters are going to hate, even when you (often) rescue them in their Rubicon on 37s.... not saying I'd brag or anything, just sayin... :D

People use to give me dirty looks when my H2™ was bone stock. After exhaust roof rack and others I get thumbs up

Ahhh.. I forgot about gas mileage. I think I've heard the phrase "What you get in that? 9 gallons per mile?" about a hundred times. I still gotta get some pics posted up.. my interior is currently torn apart due to an HVAC issue, so I can't really photo-shoot it until that's fixed.

If someone has a problem with my H2 and has the balls to say something to my face I would just hand them their teeth. They would be sorry.
