I've riveted aircraft skin on with countersunk fasteners and put together hydraulic clamping machinery that uses these on the backbone/chassis that put several thousand psi into them. If you're talking about shear forces from hitting and sliding over rocks, they are just as strong. If you are talking about tensile strength, yes they may pull out a little easier, but how often do you plan on trying to pry the plates straight off?

You have to actually wheel to know. Good example, the CBPhoto UCP of a couple years ago. They were great for East coast mud holes and pushing water but failed miserably on Moab rocks and relentless pounding on rock ledges. I have no doubt that the KMW skids are up to the task and our West/Southwest/West coast wheeling on more than powerline roads and mud holes. Great work and design Scarsman!

Have you thought about how countersunk hardware would work in those locations instead of hex head fasteners?
Yes, I did think about that. The problem I see is the plate is only 3/16" thick. Once you countersunk a hole far enough to get a tapered, flat-headed bolt into it flush, you're pretty far into it. And then you are only flush. You would have to use an allen socket fastener, and I think it would be easy to grind up the head enough to not be able to get a wrench into it. Now you could get away with shorter bolt guards, but you still have allen head fasteners. My experience has been that unless they are the really big sizes, allens are not great for higher torque, repeated use applications as they strip the heads out easily.

Now I did consider a different way of having them all fully countersunk but still with reliable hex head bolts. It would have to be done with all saddle brackets like the one I made for the rear guard and not use any of the stock holes. The issue with this is it would be more parts and much more complicated to build, and would likely make a substantial price difference.

So short answer, yes, they could be countersunk using the stock mount points, but it would not provide the long term durability/reliability/ease-of-use I would want for putting my name on it.

I could do them fully countersunk with reliable hardware, but it would be expensive. Certainly the ultimate, but very expensive.

Some may have a minimal increase of they don't do much of that color. I'm guessing no more than an extra $75-100. It depends on if they are doing batches of the particular color. Black is easy because they do a lot of it. Less common ones might incur a "minimum charge" to flush the gun and load a different powder for just one item.

Agreed. Black it is then since they don't have metallic orange. Been debating on redoing all my armor, roof rack, guards in metallic orange against the grey. Could look cool.

Well, I should clarify. These colors are for a thermo plastic powder coat I use. Regular powder coats are really a lot like paint, and can chip easily and start flaking off. This stuff has a softer texture so it doesn't chip, and it bonds to the metal so well that if you scrape through it it might rust where the metal gets exposed, but it won't flake off at the edges of the scrape.

Now if you want regular powder coat like is on most parts, like bumpers and other roof racks, then they can do any color you could possibly imagine. Including metallic orange! [emoji6]

Just to update, I'm still waiting on quotes for you guys. I called the guy just now and apparently there was some kind of email issue and he did not get my emails. He is out of the office right now, but will have them to me by tomorrow morning at least. I'll let you know as soon as I hear.

Ok, 06PullUouT and Geoanimal, shipping to you guys is $250.

For reference for everyone else, I have priced shipping to three west coast addresses and those were $150

These two are eastern, Connecticut and Alabama, and it is $250.

Just for information, true shipping cost is actually a little higher than that, but I am eating a part of the shipping to help keep it reasonable.

I'm seriously interested in a pair for my H3T... I'm hoping Dallas (75087) won't cost you as much as it does to CT and you won't eat as much!

I just sent of a quote request for you.

I have one order so far from Abntroop, and I will be picking up the steel next week. If anyone is interested in a set, I can pick up more steel at the same time. My shop is too small for me so I don't have room to store much steel if I'm not using it right away.

Also, I won't be able to make any during June. So if you're thinking about it, now is a good time!

For you Rancho guys, that should be getting figured out this month.
