After the SAS install in my 06 I5 with hydro assist, my PS started to whine after a couple of trips. Fluid was getting very hot. I installed a new ACD pump before Moab last year and it only started to whine after I got back. Each trip to local trails it would start to whine quicker, to the point that driving around town it would whine. I would siphon out @ 6 - 10 ounces before each trip just to make it last until I came up with a solution.
After some research and friends at work, I decided on a 18" finned aluminum single pass cooler. I holds a measured 24 ounces, significantly increasing the PS fluid capacity. The extra volume alone aids with cooling and longevity. The single pass is more efficient and with the steering box and pump on either side of the engine it made the install simple. I haven't had a chance to run a trail yet due to the less than perfect weather in So Cal, but when I do I will use my thermal camera to take measurements. Several of my desert racing co-workers use these for PS and transmission coolers. Not as efficient at a radiator style but these are far more durable and will never plug up with dirt.
