H3 Front Driveshaft CV:

Got my new CV in last night. I'm going to replace it this weekend, but I have a few questions. First the new CV is bone dry and it didn't come with any grease, of coarse I know it needs grease but do I use normal bearing grease and just pack it in by hand, or get CV grease? Second the new one has what appears to be a locking spring clip inside it, do I have to rip into the old one to disengage it?

Just wanna get all my ducks in a row before I tear into it. The grease that blew out of the old one was poop brown with a bad case of diarrhea lol.

Will do, I was kinda surprised it arrived bone dry or without grease. I've done U-Joints before, but not a CV style. A write up will be done

I've got a tube of Lucas red n tacky grease which I really like. Might use it, since on my Alpha it gets cooked from the exhaust (why my old one died).

You can just pull the old one out, that c-clip will disengage itself with some hard pulls

Ok cool, my old one is good except the boot blew out. On an Alpha that CV gets cooked by the exhaust/cat. Thinking the lucas grease being thicker would help it. OEM stuff was more like sticky brown water. Going to pack it rotate it, pack it, and then seal it up.

where did you buy the replacement cv ? mine blew out last year on the trail. I was able to find a whole new drive shaft in Boulder. I would like to rebuild the old one for a trail spare

Got mine off of RockAuto, but I found it even cheaper off of Ebay. I had a code and got mine for 90.00.

The Ebay ones were like 100-105 with free shipping. Saw one for 95.00 but it had 15.00 s&h.

I think there are some mixed conversations going on here. I assume the OP is talking about a propshaft CV, not an axle CV. Just a clarification for anyone interpreting this otherwise.

Yep driveshaft CV not a front CV axle.

Removed the old shaft. Failure was the boot tore where it's crimped at factory to the CV body. Will post up a write up, but I ran out of time to finish it.

I used Lucas Red n Tacky grease along with one of my 2 year old daughters baby spoons to pack the new driveshaft CV.
