H2 external tranny cooler

Just installed the H2 external transmission cooler and completely by-passed the radiator internal cooler. Now i don't have to worry about the coolant mixing with transmission fluids when the radiator internal cooler go.

I used this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0060NKA1U?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

Also, did this:
replaced transmission filter, transmission pan and gasket (old pan we're dented from off-roading)
completely flushed the transmission fluids with oem dexron 6 and reset transmission fluid life to 100% with Tech 2
replaced transfer case fluids with oem dexron 6
replaced front and rear differential fluids with oem 75w90 synthetic gear oil
replaced rear brake pads and parking brake shoes

Serviced front brakes
Need right rear parking brake cable, siezed, parts on order.

Road test result with the new external cooler (about 20 km distance), will update for long term use:
54*C at idle with 90*C engine temp.
65*C at 110 km/hr with 28*C outside temp

I used to run around 98*C with the stock tranny cooler.
I will see if i need to install the by-pass valve in the winter.

I appreciate the post since most don't have 08/09 models.
Next time I drive around, I will check my transmission temp. It's usually 32C+ here for at least 5 months out of the year & rarely gets to or below freezing.
I can't recall my transmission temp breaking 80C/175F and that's usually stop & go traffic with my foot heavy on the gas. I'm guessing 68C/155F normally between 55C and 70C in 32C+ temps.

Nice mod though. That'll be on my list, eventually.

That's a really sweet looking install--do it yourself or did you farm out the work? I like how clean the brackets look--like they're supposed to be there.
What did you do to connect the lines? Did you have to cut them or was there a fitting available to make it work?
I've been looking for a tranny cooler for the deuce for a couple of years and am curious if this would help with cooling it down for towing, esp. out here in the middle of the desert. I was really scared driving the trailer from Phoenix back to El Centro in June, my temps were rocketing up with every hill I encountered and the two small passes I had to go through were hell.

no cutting line required. just unplug it from the radiator cooler and connect it to the external cooler hose. i cleaned and plugged the radiator cooler with the same radiator cooler rubber plug that i saved when i replaced my wife H3 radiator.

If it was black & had no prior knowledge, you'd really never known that it was an add on.
Ever consider painting it black? I think you'd drop your transmission temps by possibly a degree, lol. It would match though.

Thanks SK, the color doesn't really bother me as long as it works. I can barely see it when the hood closed. :giggle:

Any updates on performance of your trans cooler? I took a trip up I-8 out of El Centro this weekend with the travel trailer and my trans hated the climb, took quite awhile to cool it back down. I need more cowbell baby.........

I would consider installing a bypass for when the transmission fluid is cold. the longer it takes for the fluid to warm up to operating temp, the longer it's wear protection properties are not active (as active). Just a thought.

Thanks, i always check the tranny temp on the dash. When outside temp is at -20c, remote start it, after about 15-20 min. of engine running, tranny temp is already at 4c and climbing. 50 min. of driving and it's around 52c. This is the first winter experiment with this cooler and i'm still considering installing the bypass valve.

I towed my trailer from SD to Superstition Mtn via the 8 with my H3 and it was some slow going...I didn't pay attention to the trans temp... I really need to do this to the deuce before it's too late, not so much for temp control but to avoid the dreaded coolant/tranny fluid mixing

Edit: it was actually with the H2, and it was still slow going...
