Fixing/upgrading my transmission 4L60e

I've got an error code for my trans, related to the input speed sensor (ISS). Checked around and found the trans needs to be dropped for this specific part to be replaced (which is going to happen anyway for other reasons)!

Since Im going to have alot of work done on the H3 soon and expecting substantial power, my go to guy told me to get a trans rebuild kit (with heavy duty parts) and replace the solenoids as well.

Looked around and found the following:

Solenoid kit:

Master kit:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4L60E-Rapto...K19-/360219252597?hash=item53debd9775&vxp=mtr

I couldn't find one thread with everything in it. Perhaps someone can help me with this and if there is something Im missing....

Many of the MiaB reviews I've seen have dealt with missing parts on the inventory and poor customer service. The do look good though. Don't forget a torque converter if it's out already.

Given the cost and complexity of an automatic rebuild....I'm surprised more people don't just swap to a manual. Adding a peddle set and cutting a hole in the floor seems like a lot of work but, when it's done...it's done. No TCM. No reflash. No dickin around trying to get it to work properly.

Looked into doing manual and the shifter of all truck transmissions comes up near firewall and is on opposite end of where the stock manual transmission shifter tower is located. You would have to rig up some sketchy linkage to make it work

I got a Tremec TKO-600 in my 69 Impala. I occasionally drag race this car, and I do full-throttle (no lift) speedshifts with 10" Micky-Thompson DOT slicks...502 motor...12-bolt with 4.11s. This 4400 pound behemoth (without driver) does 12.90s @ 106 with this gearbox, and never misses a beat. The Tremec is a top-loader with a totally internal shifter....killer transmission. I cannot say enough good words about it. The shifter can be mounted in several positions to suit many different layouts, and they are real popular with the muscle car crowd for this reason. It also comes with a VSS or cable-drive for the speedo, and there are several over-drive ratios to choose from (in both 5 and 6 speed models). In the photo below you can see the optional locations for shifters, and the diagram shows the dimensions for each. Surely one of these would come up right in the factory location...

Rockland Standard Gear is now offering a 4WD model...here's the press release...

I'm not saying it wouldn't be a project...it most certainly will. But, the last time I had an AT rebuilt it came to $2700 (4L80E in my Suburban). That got me a bone stock rebuild. Hindsight is always 20/20. Next time I'll junk the AT and go with a manual. At a certain level of horsepower and a certain level of abuse...its almost mandatory. Plus, you don't need a programmer or tranny cooler either.

The stock 5 speed 1st gear ratio is 3.75 that car transmission has 2.97. Might not seem like a big difference but as I am sure you know you it does from a standstill pulling a trailer, larger than stock tires etc. That was one of the options I looked into but I was told to stay away due to the 1st gear ratio. Since it does have a 0.62 6th vs the stock 0.75 5th you could run 5.38 with 35s and probably feel close to stock. I haven't used a gear calculator to get exact final drive ratio but Id bet it would be close. There was a thread on another forum with a guy that put an nv4500 in his h2 and it looked stock when it was done. He used a very basic linkage and hid it under the center console. With the NV4500 6.34 1st gear ratio and short overall length you would have a good match for a 5 cyl H3 running 35s/ 37s with only 4.56 gears.

When I was researching the NV4500 (to be installed on a JK with an LS3 engine swap, running36s), the newer trans that came on the dodge have a 5.61:1 first gear ratio, the remaining gears are equal to the 4l60 ratios.

A 6l80/90 is a proper upgrade. can handle alot of abuse, 4:1 first gear (better than stock 3:1) and two overdrive ratios, at least fifth gear would be a better over drive gear for a truck with 35s than the 4l60e's 4th gear.

Not a possibility for California . . . smog laws here get tricky. That is the whole reason I ordered mine with a manual. The added benefit of no radiator leaks into the tranny and a lower first gear also add to the package!

So your trans guy is getting you to source the parts?

I've rebuilt my own trans during the engine swap and I think I had things right until vibrations loosened bolts which led to some failures. I then had a professional rebuild at which point I could knowledgibly discuss what I wanted in it.

Upgrades during the rebuild are as follows:

Hardened sun shell- mandatory
BW high energy frictions
Corvette servo
Pwm delete ( not recommended if your ECU runs eccm)
Sonnax boost valve
7 clutch stack in the 3-4
Low stall converter (n/a)

I probably should have upgraded the sprag too to the bw 29 element but I didn't.

I would personally sit with your trans builder, discuss the goals and a required parts list and go from there. Any good trans guy can source all the parts. I paid $1400 for the rebuild including labor and torque converter.

I'm no expert, but I did watch some you tube videos and have taken one fully apart and back together so I understand some of what is going on in there.

It seems like couple of the things u mentioned are included in the monster in a box packages options. Once I'm back in a couple of days I'll be ordering my rebuild kit. My questions is the speed sensor I want to know if they have it in the kit or am I going to but one I know Amazon sells them for relatively cheap so I'll see. Can't wait to get in with this project of rebuilding my tranny, I am both excited and nervous. But I'm confident I got it. There some good detail videos on YouTube...
