Do you think any of the mods may have contributed to the roll over or was it just a dumb a$$ driver?

Either way I don't want that sack of trouble!

I've always said never buy a used off road vehicle unless you’re sure it's never been off road. I've seen the way some people drive.

Lol agreed. And that's a good question. If u look in the pics he has his sway bars disconnected and is leaning like a bastard. Then again there was a soa rear rancho front on 37s designed by hummer. They wheeled moab and didn't roll. So im curious to see what others think. Driver or rig?

Yes, but they also didn't produce it! With very few exceptions, every time you modify your vehicle reliability take a hit. The bigger the mod the bigger the reliability hit. It all depends on your objectives. Anybody can look cool on 37's at the mall but it takes a lot of finesse and spare parts to wheel it. It also takes a group that is willing to wait for repairs. When the second tie rod broke on Gold Mountain people lost confidence in the driver. We made him take the bypass around the talus rock garden. Do you want to be that guy?

the answer is no of course not. It actually helps restore the halfshafts to factory settings. Level cv's are alot better then even a barely cranked h3 or h3t. I would say reliability takes a hit if the product isn't designed right. buy some one off kit of course its gonna suffer. The lifts are made for reliability. Even tim has said that rancho always tries to preserve a factory ride. Lifted rigs have there issues but there are solutions. Non lifted rigs have their issues and there are solutions out there too. I would not run 37s. That's too risky and would affect DD performance. Even though axles don't raise bumpers rockers and mid section do. I get hung up on the mid section. when i go under the 3 I see the gas tank skid and spring hangers with the most rock rash and barely any of the front diff skid. I have the clearance there already

Actually, I think the Rancho lift is one of the best tested lifts available. My concern is that all lifts increase the center of gravity and make the vehicle slightly more prone to rollover. However, the increase in the CG isn't enough to cause a rollover unless it is combined with a stupid driver, too much ego or too much testosterone. I’m sure none of those conditions ever apply to you! :hans:

You should also keep in mind that Rancho recommends 4.5” backspace versus the stock 5.5” backspace, so the tires will stick out another 1” relative to stock wheels and you’re going to have to include wheels into the cost of the mod. Also, you will need to modify the OEM UCP or have a fab shop built a new UCP $$$.

There is also a rarely enforced law in California that your tires can't stick beyond the fenders. I'm currently not legal since I ditched my fender flares, but so far I haven't gotten a ticket. Just something to keep in mind.

If you’re going to do it, I would recommend going to a suspension specialist that has done a Rancho lift before to make sure you get it done right.

I know that when it comes to the H1 the engineers got it pretty damn close to right. Many mods that people do to them disproportionally increase the risk of breakage compared to the performance increase gained.

Where shall I start....I have a lot to say and it will be easier now seeing I am not using tapatalk while waiting for a class to begin...First I want to say to portager, on forums and in text conversations like these it may come off as fighting and bickering but I do appreciate discussion I am not trying to be a dick. This may be helpful to future H3 owners down the road as they can see the positives and negatives of modifications. I am like you in a the way that I want reliable mods, The difference is probably where you come off as more conservative while I can be a bit risker with mods. Dave while you mention about modding an H1 I agree, I do think H1's need little modification to be an amazing wheeler, H2 and H3's are not far off from the H1. There are a few improvements I see that could be made but from an "out of the showroom floor" wheeler I think the H3 is the best around when comparing it to others. I do understand why some vehicles need a ton of mods to become capable. A good example of this was this crazy hillclimb I took last week. I have a lot of local trails where I live and a buddy of mine has a Jeep YJ. Its moderately built and he couldnt make it up this steep rutted hill. He tried dozens of times and couldnt make it. a few days later I go there with him as a passenger to tackle this hill that he couldnt get up. He was almost sure I couldnt do it....I walked right up, granted the ruts were huge he was flexed out while I was on 2 wheels doing the famous teeter totter but the traction control kicks ass. He was amazed. I got concerned of stability and felt like I was going to roll while he was commenting on how this thing feels so stable and said you wanna feel like what it is when your really about to roll take a ride in my jeep. He said that thing leans like a bastard. I told this story because it does show how capable we are out of the box. That was with a bone stock suspension minus bilsteins up front. Hummer has done a great job on the H3, I have the most "undesirable" year to boot. smallest motor, most susceptible to motor issues, not even an adv. package and this thing rocks. In all types of terrain I have done I have had very little issues except for one one category...Rockcrawling. I will get to rockcrawling later but a review on other terrain has all been positive. On road you can beat it. A great riding 4x4 for on road, great Daily Driver. Mud, Everyone assumes that you need the big block 454 V8 with 44in mud boggers to do some crazy mud but with the duratracs and the I5 I have excelled in mud and the mud by me isnt friendly mud, ask cbetts he refers to it as "gorilla snot." Hillclimbing, dirt, fire roads and high speed sections all are a walk in the park for me in the H3. It handles it very well again. In the snow it did well also. I havent tried sand but power might be the only issue for me there. I would leave the setup I have now and never do another mod if I wasnt rockcrawling. For a basically stock height vehicle, it does amazing but I want some more clearance. That is my only compliant. Clearance at the axles are fine too its just the damn mid section. I know I sound like a broken record but that is where I struggle. I have thought long and hard on this and feel like a rancho kit may benefit me. Am I afraid to try it out? YES, because like portager I can be conservative at times with mods and like Dave I question myself and say hmmm did hummer do a good enough job? Should I leave it alone? I wouldnt be so concerned about it if I bought this as a beater for 800 bucks. I would lift it chop it up weld in a rollcage and just have the beater rig attitude but this isnt a beater that is why so much thought has gone into the rancho lift. Another concern is that this rig isnt built just for rockcrawling. Its for all terrain so how will it effect me on other terrain? I would say its about the same as without the lift except offcamber, but I also look at it this way. Zach has a non lifted H2 and has been way off camber before, look at serge, 6 in lift 38s and alot of weight up top and he has also been off camber and has managed not to roll. All I want to do is do it right and build up an all around rig and in the process post up great discussions that show both sides to every mod that can help there decision process too.

One thing I notice on all the forums it is always people that do not have the rancho lift saying it is not needed. Kind of like non-hummer owners saying hummers are not needed.

I know you are concerned with the off camber stuff but you have to remember you have to go wider with the wheels because of the backspace and that should give you your stability back and that will help on off camber stuff.

Chris;

I'm really not trying to pick on you, I just want to make sure you have thought this through and now I think you have. I actually think the Rancho lift. I think it is the best option if you need more ground clearance (and I do). I just worry about making it worse in other areas and the real total cost (i.e. the Rancho kit, plus wheels, plus shocks, ...). BTW the "..." can really add up.

Mike I really don't feel that way. To be honest your opinion is wanted and I appreciate it. when people post up with objections on a subject it helps with the thinking process and dealing with pros and cons. Cost adds up which is fine if the results are there. Ucp wont be an issue because I can weld. I have modified my existing ucp and the welds have held up well which is good. Luckily the rancho kit is a bolt on kit. Let's say for arguments sake I hate the kit it can be taken off. I will hold onto my old parts. If I take it off and resell it would be a loss financially but would be worth it if I hated it enough. I believe this will also potentially help out the socal H3s and you too in mods seeing strengths and weaknesses from me being lifted. I guess we will wait and find out.

I've done that more times that I want to even think about. Buy something, try it out and it just doesn't end up working how you wanted it too so you take it off and resell if for a loss. Eh... whatever. Everything in life is trial and error. Unfortunately for me it seems for be more error than success. :)

IMHO, it can be really hard to judge things that other people say are great or terrible. Nobody is created equal and you never know what YOU are gonna like, love or hate till you try it.

Chris,

My question is do you really need the lift? Take a look at Craig, before he got his KM2's he was the lowest truck and pretty much has gotten through everything he has tried. Some of it depends on the line you are taking too. I had planned on getting a lift. Key word here is had planned. I have since changed my mind. With the trails I have done, I have gotten through without a lift. I may drag some places where Serge and John don't, but it really wasn't cost effective for me to go with the lift. My UCP has gotten a work out but well worth the money I spent on it.

you do make good points but over this past year I have lost clearance. I have added weight which I don't mind because the weight I have added is useful but I just feel like that boost will help a bit. I am really wondering how I will perform at lcc compared to a year ago.

Btw twinmill did u really put ur h3 gently on it's side?

I know some were wondering how it flopped on its side so I asked him how it happened. Driver error? Too unstable? Etc. This is copy and pasted from the thread. Not sure how bias or true but heres what he said

Driver error. I let a freind of mine drive it, I have a Linked & coiled F250 for a trail vehicle & he wanted to come along & I wanted to see how the H3 did on the trails at Dresser, WI. The H3 was doing great untilthe right side dropped into a hole as big as the truck and laid over on it's side. The truck is very stable not too top heavy even with the sway bars disconnected.

UPDATE: The rig was sold. It was sold to a guy in SoCal. I PM'ed him and he lives about 10 minutes from me! I definitely wanna check this thing out. I am not sure if he is fixing the damage but the previous owner claims the quote was gonna be 14k :whaa:
