Cv shaft replacement

I have a leaking axle seal and torn cv boot on my drivers side. I have two cardone cv axles and two gm axle seals ready to go in. Can I just replace the drivers side? Or should I go ahead and do the passenger side even though nothing is wrong over there. Will it mess anything up by running a cardone axle on one side and a gm on the other? Like will it be unbalanced? They might not weigh the same....

I have had no issues changing them out one at a time.

They will be balanced in the sense that the shaft spins and does not wobble, but who knows how much they each physically weigh compaired to eachother.... but that shouldn't make any noticable difference as you drive down the road

I'd only repair one side, no reason to pull out a perfectly good part. I've replaced a few - my vehicle and others - and always done just one side each time.

Nothing wrong with doing one side only. Carefully inspect other side axle boots for signs of deterioration that may indicate a ruptured boot is on the way. and if you do decide to do both sides look carefully at the axle support bushing on the right side as that side takes a lot more abuse than the drivers side. You need to pull CV axle to replace so it would be a good time to do that also. Its only a few more minutes of work to R/R the bushing plate assembly at that time. Driver side mounts seem to outlast pass side ones 2 to 1 or better.
And dont forget that proper axle nut torque is important to wheel bearing life. Ive witnessed too many idjits in shops with their big ol air guns just hammer the nut as tight as their gun will take it. You need to take it up to proper torque of 180 ftlb. with a torque wrench.
A properly tightened axle nut is a lot easier to remove on the trail when you have to replace it.

Don't want hijack this thread but I just started to shop for new CV shafts myself. What are the better brands to go with? AC Delco for $175 or Cardone for $70?

The cheapest I found the AC delco shafts was about $260 each so I went with the Cardones for $65 each. I believe many people have used the Cardones and they seen to work ok. I plan on installing mine this Saturday.

How long did the stock ones last. mine are at 120000 miles not a lot of wheeling i bought the H3 used
How many miles on the Cardones does any body know how long they have lasted?
My experience has been OEM last longer but I can't always afford them.
And buy what you can afford

Just bought 3 Cardone Select from eBay for $58 each. I read that the seal should also be replaced, can't find a write up on that. Is there any other seal or race that should be replaced at the same time?

I need to replace my drivers side cv shaft, the inner boot is leaking. I was looking at AC Delco. How are the Cardone shafts holding up? Any issues with installation or operation? The price difference is hard to pass up. I have 134k miles on the original shafts with a readylift leveling kit installed at 44k. 2008 H3.

Busted the axle (not the CV itself) on a Cardone but I deserved that one. Other than that they are holding up well for me.

I busted a Cardone when it should not have broken... I am going to rebuild OEM's from now on only.... going to upgrade to RCV CV's as soon as I break one more CV (have one in the shed ready for an RCV unit to be popped on)

It was the axle shaft, it sheared right off as if a band saw cut right through it perfectly straight

Seems like Cardone (and maybe EMPI) are using good CVs but the construction of the shafts themselves may be an issue.

I'd like to have mine factory ones as trail spares, any chance I can get your old ones to make into RCV.
