Could really use advice on new air compressor for rear suspension

Greetings Everyone!

I have a 2003 Hummer H2 that just turned 100k miles.

It looks like my rear air compressor has finally gotten to the point where it needs replacement.

My GM Dealership quoted me $2,250 for a new stock compressor w/o labor and it comes with a 2-year warranty.

I did locate an equivalent which runs about $1,800 from a company in Germany, and also comes with a 2-year warranty. Here is the link to the product:

https://aerosus.com/other/hummer/hummer-h2-air-suspension-compressor-air-supply-unit-2003-2007.html

I won't lie to you, if this compressor is truly German made, it does instill some confidence. On the other side of the coin, it also feels good knowing the GM part I am purchasing is genuine and made in the states.

I plan on keeping my Hummer for a very long time, and this compressor is quite the investment.

Do these numbers quoted seem right to everybody? Is there another compressor I should be taking a look at?

Thank you all in advance for your advice,

Mike

My air compressor has went out twice on my 2004 H2. The first time the dealer said there was a leak in the line so it ran too much and cooked the compressor. I asked what would keep that from happening again. They said the later models had a dual tank setup so this would not happen again. I had them replace it at a cost of around $2k installed. About 60k miles later it failed again so I took off all the air ride equipment and installed springs. That would be my recommendation. The ride is not that much different and the price was less than $250 from eBay if you do the work yourself. Not a hard installation.

Also if you take the air ride system off I would be interested in the skid plate for it. Thinking about reinstalling an air compressor for tires and maybe an air locker down the road.

Yes, I was actually going to ask about that - I heard about that conversion a couple years ago.

I mentioned the spring solution to my buddy at the dealership, and he said I probably wouldn't be happy with the results (the ride would be crappy). I am still however, open to that idea. Since I don't go off-roading or load down my Hummer with heavy equipment, I really don't need to worry about auto-leveling suspension.

I noticed there is a compressor for later model Hummers - I assume these dual tank versions are not compatible with my 2003?

Thanks for your great information :)

Personally I could not tell that much of a difference in the ride but everyone has to judge that for themselves. I do off-roading and not having the auto leveling has not been an issue. Also I tow my H2 behind my motor home so now I never have an issue of stopping somewhere and finding the rear suspension compressed because the air leaked out and the compressor was off while towing. The air ride is nice when it works but the springs ALWAYS work. For me it did not make sense to keep throwing a couple of thousand dollars at a recurring problem on a 14 year old vehicle when there was an inexpensive permanent solution.

I would assume that the dual tank version would work since that is what they retrofitted my 04 with but still ended up with the same problem even after the dealer assured me that I would not.

If your Hummer did the same thing again with the other compressor, then wouldn't it stand to reason that the leak was somewhere else along the line?

Maybe one of the airbags? Maybe the air pump hookup in the rear of the H2?

Man, my air pump ran all the darn time - it was ridiculous, I would hear it at stop lights, going through the drive through, the bank teller window, etc. Deep down, I knew it was a matter of time before the thing went.

Can you replace each individual air line between the compressor and each endpoint? It could have been just one component seeping air, and would have been nice to finally get the problem resolved.

I know you mentioned ebay or even Amazon - but I just want to make sure I get the best springs I can get my hands on...

Again, thanks for the information!

More than likely you have the old single stage compressor. New one is dual stage and tends to not overheat. Going to the dual stage you will have to replace two hoses also to make it work. There are some on eBay that come with the two hoses and compressor. I haven't looked in awhile at them can check later. Some of them are the OE supplier for GM. I am actually having an issue with mine where it drops. I had it changed out with the OE set up about 10 years. With that said, the new style does last longer. If you want, pm me and I can get you a better price on the OE set up more than likely
