Automatic Transmission Fluid Change

Just wondering if anyone has tried using a fluid extractor(such as a mityvac) with the dipstick to change the auto trans fluid on an H3?

I just did the normal pan drop and drain, which get about half the fluid.

I plan to do that as well, just thinking that I could change more of the fluid with fluid extractor, and do additional fluid changes easily. I'm at 44k miles now figured I could change fluid now with fluid extractor and then at 50k change filter and what is in trans pan.

Why change the trans filter? from what I understand most manufacturers have gone to a different type of filter that no longer requires changing the filter.. only the fluid. Even the manual and GM owner website only recommend fluid changes.

Sliding a hose down into the oi pan and sucking out the fluid would remove, at max, the same amount of fluid that you would remove if you dropped the pan. About 60 percent of trans fluid is in the trans/torque converter, lines, cooler and not in the pan. If you are dropping the pan, it makes sense to replace the filter. Yes, filter elements are better than they were 30 years ago, but heck, it's right there, replace it.

GM supports a backflush of trans, so long as the flushing fluid is the same as the fill fluid. (NO cleaning chemicals that could destroy seals, etc.) Engineering tests showed this is the best process since it removed and replaced 99 percent of the trans fluid.

Many don't like the backflush, but I'm just stating what engineering analysis showed on hundreds of transmissions/transaxles that were tested using both methods; drop pan and backflush.

It only takes about 30 seconds to change the filter. Also, most of the filters come with new pan gaskets and the gasket on my pan was brittle and stuck to the pan. Took me about thirty minutes to clean the pan for a new gasket.

Dropping the pan also lets you see more of what's going on. For example you can see the small amount of material on the magnet as well as the rocks that somehow made it down my fill tube - likely from the dealer's funnel.

IMO dropping the pen or using the extractor is almost useless since, like mentioned above, most of the oil is not in the pan. I would fine a place where they can do a full flush. Not lot of shops have a machine to do that but almost all will tell you that they have it. We used to use the BG and this thing was awesome. It is on the pricy side, but the difference of before and after is amazing.

So if I wanted to go with a different fluid, say Redline MTL, I would have to buy double the amount the whole system has? What would that be for the Alpha?
-I read somewhere the total ATF fluid is 20 pints?

And why cant I do a flush with an air compressor powered extractor likw "[h=1]Mityvac 7300 PneumatiVac Air-Operated Fluid Evacuator"?[/h]
Thanks!
