Aftermarket muffler

I have the 3.5 and cut the muffler off a while back and enjoy it for the most part except when i take a road trip. The drone becomes quite annoying when I want to drive with no radio or hold a conversation. So I guess i need to put a muffler back on but would like to keep some of the sound i like so much but just at a lower level. I have the magna flow header. Any recommendations on a muffler? if its going to quite it down back to stock I would rather just keep it the way it is... :)

On my Alpha the previous owner removed the rear muffler and just like u it sounded great except on long road trips. What I did was remove the resonator and install a magnaflow in it's place. Sounds great!!! Quiet when u want, but if you step on it she roars just like I like.

Thanks guys. I know there are different types of magna flow mufflers. is there one specific for the H3 or did you buy a one size fits all?

On the Alpha I just went with a center pipe in/out magnaflow. Just a normal model nothing fancy. Sounds great! No clearance issues with drive shaft or the floor. Actually the floor is cooler vs the stock setup which was larger and closer to the floor.

I chose the Gibson. Sounds pretty much the same as most others, quiet at speeds but you can hear it above 3k rpm. I got a good deal so that was the deal maker for me.

With no cat or muffler and just the resonator its reasonable. I used a generic straight through bullet muffler (I think it was either walker or dynomax) and I thought it sounded really good. My muffler is actually smaller than the resonator. With this setup my new engine actually makes more clattering noise than the exhaust.

Do you have a 3.5? And if so did you leave the resonator in? Curious because i was looking at the 50

I have the 3.7. I removed the resonator. I had the shop install the muffler before the axle and routed the tail pipe out the opposite side from factory.

Oh ok cool, does it have a deep sound? I was worried about the I5 sounding like a tuner haha

It does have deep rumble at idle but when I start driving it does sound kind of like a tuner. I did see a few you tube videos of h3s with 40 series flowmaster and the sound is close to the same if you want to check them out. The 50 series sounds louder than the gibson and the megnaflow from what I been told by other forum members who has heard it.

I have the 10 series and to me it sounds very good with a deep throaty rumble. It might be loud side for some people though. If you are looking for your I5 to actually sound like a truck with a decent size engine.... I really like the way mine sounds. I just had the tires rotated and the tire shop manager kept insisited I had a V8. And I kept telling him I didnt. :)

I switched to a dual catback Gibson for my H2, and It sounds just perfect, not to loud, but yet that powerful roar when you really press down on the pedal. So basically, if my windows are closed, it does not disturb conversation, or the music I'm playing. I highly suggest it.

I'm liking the series 10 and might pick one up. What size piping is on our H3s? I've got a 3.5 I'll take it to a muffler shop and have them make a custom cat-back. Is the best thing to do to have everything removed from the cat back and just run new pipe to the muffler and on out to the rear? Or does the resonator smooth the sound out a little? I like the idea of them tucking the muffler up out of the way as much as possible. Mudbug, do you happen to have any pics of where they installed yours?

Just this one from a very cold start in the morning so its a little rough. This was before I put on a resonator tip too. Once I did that it toned down quite a bit. It almost sounds like it did before the header install.
For any one looking for a deep sounding exhaust for the I5.. Take a hard look at the 10 series. Plus it is the smallest of the mufflers with a single baffle chamber so you get the best flow too.

I had the second cat removed, resonator and stock muffler the only thing I put in their place was the 10 series. I had 2.5" routed all the back the passenger side tucked up away from everything. there is no way to hit any of the system while wheeling the way mine was done. There are way too many other things that would hang the truck up before hitting the exhaust. Also have a muffler shop cut out the "squished part" of the tubing. get underneath your truck and you will see it just behind where the midpipe connects to the bottom of the manifold/header. It doesn't look that dramatic until you actually have it cut out. The inner diameter of the tube gets choked down to an inch or less. Talk about suffocating your exhaust system. Then there's precat in the manifold. GM seriously????

Also a fan of the magnaflow. I ran a 14" and it was a little loud, changed it last year to an 18" length, and its fantastic. Good rumble, but quiet on the highway.
