'98 H1 For Sale

I saw this on one of my drives the other day near home, and thought of all you wonderful warm and welcoming people here and that someone might be interested in this....It looks to be in pretty good shape..obviously has been repainted a flat black, but it looks like a good job..(I do not know the seller or anything about the Hummer)

Looks nice. Wheels and tires not to my taste. Price seems a little strong. Anyone wants my 98 for 49K can have it.

Yea it's about 7k over priced for excellent condition on kbb, im sure he can be talked down though.

OK, i mentioned this vehicle to my dad, and it peaked his interest. He is by no means willing to pay 50k for it. I just got off the phone with the owner, it has only had one owner and never been offroad. I am going to get the vin number from him and run a carfax. I am hoping to negotiate some, but he did say he has put a 3000 stereo system in, and has replaced the heater core.

My question would be to anyone who knows something about H1's and turbo diesels is are there any known problem with this particular turbo diesel? concern?

Yes the 96-2000 6.5 TD trucks were susceptible to the #8 cylinder issue. AM General replaced quite a few motors in those trucks under warranty. Many more went out after warranty. My 98 had a replacement motor put in it at about 78,000 miles. It has about 82,000 miles on it now.( 5500 miles per year ) Many people consider 98 to be the best year for H1s. In my opinion they are certainly one of the best. They had the upgraded AC and were the most advanced of the pre-TT4 trucks. Running the VIN will tell you if the motor was replaced under warranty but not if it was replaced after warranty.

PMDs seem to go out frequently (best fix to mount remote PMD with heat sink and carry a spare remote PMD; two is one, one is none)

these engines are not powerhouses, originally designed as a 6.2L NA Diesel for economy. they are strong engines but don't expect to go fast. there are some Hummer owners that absolutely loathe these engines for how slow it makes the truck. but these engines are perfect for it's intended purpose. so as long as whoever drives/owns a Hummer can understand and deal with this you should be fine. ME, this is my second Diesel (first was a 6.2) and I love these engines. simple to work on, make great torque down low. reliable.

Chris I know you do not know much about H1's so I will give you a pass.Look at H1's across autotrader and also ebay the two largest selling places for H1's and when I put my truck up for sale it was the cheapest in the country.

My truck also has no rust which most do. My truck is also mechanically in excellent shape and up to date on all services. I drove it over 300 miles to an offroad event this weekend and did every trail and obstacle with no issues and drove home. If anything my truck is a little on the cheap side from what I have seen. You also have no idea how much has been done to my truck in the last year. Everyone has an opinion but try and buy one that is in as good a shape as mine for under 30 right now.

cg it appears that it is a two owner truck so the current owner may or may not know the history of it. The AC controls are normally where the AVICs style unit is in the dash. I would ask about that. Those tires and wheels have to go also. ( you could never wheel the truck with those on the truck ) No winch knocks something off of it. I personally prefer the HMC4 body style so I like that about it. The paint will appeal to some and not others. You should be able to use it to negotiate on the price some. I suspect most people would prefer OEM paint. Looks like a nice truck but as stated earlier, the truck is probably 7K+ overpriced. ( ps, no one pays you for the super dooper stereo system you put in an h1 ) Good luck

The 6.5 TD isn't a bad motor. If the block is one of the later heavy blocks it is a damn good motor. ( 2000+ block ) It will power the truck at 65-70 mph on a flat highway. It produces plenty of torque in conjunction with the 2:1 geared hubs. It does not have much performance upside. The PMD is a weak point in that they do fail and are a pain to replace. Setting up a remote will help when that happens. This appears to be a pretty well kept truck. Not sure I would pay anywhere near that type of money if I was going to wheel it. The older mechanical trucks are much simpler. No electronics to fail, basically bullet proof. Trade off is they don't go quite as fast, might be a little louder. If possible you should try to go drive a number of trucks and get a feel for what they are like.

That engine would be my problem owning this truck--I understand they are meant to be the most capable OFF road truck in the world, but I'd have to drive on road more and lack of power flat out sucks. Hate to compare it to my '06 H3, but I have to. The 3 was uber capable anywhere in the dirt and could crawl like a baby going for candy, but put it on the road going to the trail and it was miserable. Same concept, alot of people lived with it and loved it for what it could do, but I lived with it and hated it for what it couldn't do.
I need a King of the Hammer's kind of H1---balls out fast on the flats capable on the rocks, and damn good at everything in between. Oh no, here comes the "H1's were never built to do that"------
And uh, yeah 3HUMMER's I knew the right price for your 1, but you can't fault me for trying to catch you in a senior moment.........

The H1 Alpha hauls ass pretty good. The price for that luxury is unfortunetly too high for most, especially for a trail rig.

I've heard they have a built in delay at low speeds to help prevent shocking the T-Case and damaging it. so hopefully that doesn't put a rain on anyone's parade if they want an Alpha.

But Alphas are still sweet.
