2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Annual Naches Pass Run
Time to start making plans! Last year was kind of a flop, thanks to me breaking down right at the start, ( SORRY!!! ) and several people had to cancel. However, this year I promise it will be a great trip!
When:
Saturday, August 4th 2012
Where:
We will start at the west end of the Naches Pass Trail in NW Washington about 18 miles east of Enumclaw. We’ll cross the Cascades via the pass and then run some trails and rock fields on the east side, about 40 miles north of Yakima.
Trail details:
The pass is a 4x4 trail that follows a historic wagon route across the Cascades, and reaches an altitude of just over 4300 feet. It was an early branch off of the Oregon Trail to reach the Puget Sound. We will run it from west to east. The Pass is rated mostly easy with a few difficult, to more difficult spots. If it is rainy and wet, obviously the rating will go up accordingly. There are some pretty tight spots and steep hills. Crossing time should be 3-5 hours, depending on group size and whether we hit any other traffic. At the top is Government Meadows, where there is a cabin that can be used for camping. It is about a 300 yard walk from the trail, if people want to stop and check it out. The meadows are beautiful. If the trail gets to be too much for anyone, or some are short on time, there are several jump-off points onto Forest Service roads along the way for a faster exit.
Once across the pass we will spend time on some rock fields called Moon Rocks and Funny Rocks. If there is any time left in the day we will run some of the trails in the area.
Minimum Vehicle Requirements:
- 4X4
- At least one recovery point front and rear
- Spare tire
- Recommend equivalent ground clearance/breakover of stock H3
- Remove nerf bars/side steps
Of course any and all vehicle types are welcome, but for reference sake the pass can be done in a stock Hummer. Brush rake will be pretty much a guarantee. As stated above, on the pass there are tight spots, so vehicle damage is a distinct possibility. I did it in the snow and in the dark in my H2 without any damage, but H3slate can attest that there was absolutely zero room for error in a few spots. So driver beware!
UCP is not a must have for the pass. There are no extreme obstacles on the pass, just steep and tight. Once we get to the Moon and Funny Rocks, you can get as extreme or mild as you want. Or just sit back and watch!
