H3 CV Joint fail :(

So I started noticing a 'popping' sound from the front right immediately following a suspect alignment I got at a local shop back in early December immediately after cranking my T bars to 23". I intentionally didn't go any higher due to lots of reading about angles and wear on cv joints. I took it to a co-worker's father's mechanic shop to have a second look (it was pulling to the left a little, popping ... and the previous alignment knuckleheads had drained my battery and caused other headaches that they weren't up front about so I wasn't going back to them to let them fix whatever they did wrong). My co-worker's pops noticed my lower front differential mount was trashed (I had noticed this was an issue and had pointed it out on top of the suspect alignment so I was prepared for it). That was replaced around 12/23/12. 'Popping' seemed to go away. I still didn't trust the alignment so I took it to another alignment specialist around 1/5/13 - the camber adjustment bolt on the right front was completely loose. :whaa: I had been driving around for a month with my right front camber changing freely (I did end up returning to the original alignment shop and secured a full refund). We did a 4 wheel alignment, everything has been driving perfectly since and I didn't notice any more popping ... until about two days ago it started to come back. It's official - my right CV joint is on it's last leg. It's being replaced as I type - my mechanic found the part (oem) for $150 and is charging $300 labor. I can't afford to go too long without transportation or I'd look into doing this myself and spring for RCV Performance Products Hummer H3 Ultimate High Strength CV Joint, but from what i've read, it's not a fun or easy job. I'm getting a full 2 year warranty on parts and labor should it fail again (they know it goes off road and they still honor the warranty regardless of how it may fail again), but I'm thinking this is likely premature wear leading to failure due to the camber retaining bolt having been loose for a time. Theories? Ideas? I know cv joints can be sourced for as cheap as ~$125 shipped on ebay, but I feel like considering some folks are saying upwards of $450 for the cv joint from a dealership that I'm doing alright - the diagnosis was complete around 2pm today and they had a driver bring the part an hour later. I can't prove what led to the failure ... I was up at Hidden Falls less than two weeks ago and it never made a single noise or gave me any problems at all.

For any of you wondering how to tell if it's your cv joint making noise, for me - if I turned to the right (the side with the problem) and gave it a reasonable amount of gas from a stop (any normal right turn taken even slightly aggressively) I would hear it pop consistently with each rotation of the wheel with increasing frequency as I accelerated and it would cease the minute I backed off of the gas. It only makes noise under torque (which is logical).

In any event, I'll have my truck back tomorrow morning at the latest, repaired for under $500 and as soon as the right cv joint is replaced, they're going to scope the left for vibrations. It looks initially like the left is fine. I've been wheeling in my H3 for four years now and I've spent less $$ in repairs for this truck than any other vehicle I've owned for the same period and this is my first off-road vehicle. I honestly would have expected this stuff to be much more costly given the 'Hummer' = expensive to repair stigma.

Swapping a half-shaft is a fairly straight-forward process. $500 is actually a tad high IMO but, hey...can't complain about the turn-around time. Half-shafts replacement is just part of wheeling with an IFS. You should keep a couple spares in your garage. I think OEM or Cardone shafts are perfectly acceptable, and periodic replacement is something everybody should consider...especially if the truck gets off-roaded a lot. The fact that you got four years of one is amazing!

I know plenty of guys replacing solid axle axleshafts. **** happens when you wheel but I think the RCVs are a good upgrade.

Just found this youtube 'how-to' on it. If I lose another, I'll go with the RCVs and do it myself. I was basing it being difficult on other posts where the conclusion was it was difficult and I'm looking at buying a 4 cyl s**tbox to use to get to / from work so I can take miles off of "The Dude" and park it for days for projects like this while still being able to get around. In case anyone else stumbles across this post in the future with similar dilemmas to consider, this video may add more insight as to what is involved if you're considering doing this yourself.

I wish I had known we could have done it a couple of weeks ago in no time for the price of the part. Call your friend s next time we are here to help.

I did both of mine by myself in about three hours a couple of weeks ago. Not a difficult job. I kept my two old ones with 117,000 miles on them as spares. A tie rod puller helped immensely.

I also found that the Cardone one was about 1/2" longer than the OEM one and wouldn't bend into place. I had to undo the lower ball joint in addition to the upper ball joint to get the Cardone halfshaft into place.

No reason at all to feel badly! I didn't know I had a failing CV two weeks ago.

Like with everything in life, you live and you learn. I took it in to have the noise diagnosed, got the quote, did a little research and it seemed like a lot less than it could have been so I just told the shop to do it. I may order another, do the left side myself in the coming weeks and keep the old one as a backup just for the experience. I'm also working on getting something else as a daily driver, which would have made this a less urgent matter. I like to stay positive - better to hear it and get it fixed while it still drives than have it fail in Moab in two months!!

My CV is already failing too, luckily Im still under warranty. I bought the truck used with 35K miles on it, im now on 40K and went wheeling twice and I could hear/feel the CV joint popping when the left tire is flexed and turning.
I was pretty disappointed it was failing this soon! Just the other day I was having an argument that my H3 is as cheap to maintain as a Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero! Won the argument by pointing out all the abuse the other truck I had went thru and the small amount of repair bills I had to pay. Hope he doesnt find out Im replacing the joint soon :p

That's weird for early failure my boot ripped after 101k miles and the cv is still good just a new boot and I'm good to go

I checked the boot, not even a scratch! Wheeling here shouldnt be as harsh too, its all driving on soft sand and using 4HI locked and sometimes unlocked, and I still didnt get the chance to install the big tires!!!
Anyway, glad for the warranty, just bummed about the fact it has to be done so early.

I had both sides of CV boots replaced twice in 100,000 miles with no CV failures. Replaced both half shafts recently as a precautionary measure

My left front just started making noise Saturday. How far is safe to drive on a noisy half shaft? I have a 200 mile trip to make back home.

I also need some more info related to cv shafts... My axle seal is leaking (I think)... should i go ahead an replace the cv shaft while I'm at it? If so, which cv shaft should I get? I've seen so many aftermarket ones.

I literally just dropped mine off at shop today to get this done. I ordered ac delco seals with cardone half shafts. I also got more front diff fluid because I figured why not. Cheaper to add fluid now than to deal with a seized up front diff. As for quality of cardones I've heard a lot of reviews most positive so hopefully they will work out. I will be keeping the half shafts that are currently on and will check them to see what shape there in as 4speed recommended to rebuild the stock shafts which if any damage I will. That way I will have a spare which will be nice. Bottom line is while your in there it would be easy to just swap the shaft so why not.

Awesome Do you have a link to the cardones you bought? I got quoted $270 to just replace the seal.. So one of my friends and I will be tackling this project lol. Are you replacing the seal and shafts on both sides?

I don't have a direct link but I got them from rock auto and would recommend them. The shafts were packaged nicely compared to other places I have ordered from. Yes I will be replacing both sides as both of mine were leaking
