Does sound like a good deal though I would ask how they have an extra one - it's not like people upgrade to chrome ones and leave the unshiny parts for sale.

I would like to take that apart and see if it can be modified so 4HI-street mode only drives the rear output. (I'm too afraid to experiment with mine).

YES. Buy it now. Parts FOR the tcase are expensive-- buying it for a spare if it's good, or just for it's parts (you may or may not be able to rebuild it cheap based on what
s wrong). I'd buy it without a second thought.

CJ:

not to steel the thread but...

I have a spare 4:10 t case in my garage, had some minor problems with it not disengaging but overall in good shape for back up if I need it. If you are going to Rausch Creek in December I could bring it & see what Thorparts trades could be at some point now that you are back in business (?).
let me know

After having a few of them apart, I can't think of how we'd get that to happen... that would sure be nice though.

So I wanna call this guy and ask about the T/C but having little to no real knowledge of these I kinda need some help from you guys. What questions should I ask? How do I inspect the t/c to know I'm not getting hosed? Any help is appreciated

From the looks of the pic, it is in a reman case. A 4.10 transfer case from gm, comes strap to a pallet with a cardboard box over it. Not saying it isn't legit. But, I would ask about the pic. For that price, if it is working is a great price. If it needs to be rebuilt it all depends on the internal damage. Just my $.02

Ok, I called him and he's calling back. I'll let you know... if it's a 4494 with the 4:1 it's PROBABLY worth it no matter what... but it could be the 2:1 case. I'll let you know what I find out.

You got it!!! Still waiting... it does sound like it's still available. Just about any part you have to replace is $100... and if the hi/low gear is good that would allow anyone to swap to a 4:1 from a 2:1 at a super low cost. I'd buy it just for the spare parts. But... let's check its history first.

Yeah I looked up the replacement parts list and the associated cost doesn't seem to pricey. I just don't know enough to ask all the appropriate questions regarding these technical things and do hickies ;)

Update: I called the guy, MedicMorgan is picking it up today for $250. :) Looking forward to another tcase rebuild thread! :) Here's the AWESOME story behind it (awesome for US, not awesome for the poor customer who got screwed):

Some poor schmuck's TCase wouldn't shift (no offense to poor schmucks, I've been there myself). So he brought it to an auto-electric shop. Shop said "well duh, let's swap the tcase". And they did. (The one for sale is the one that came off of an 06 adventure h3...). Tcase still wouldn't shift. CRAP! So they replaced the control module... and it magically shifted. So customer paid for a new tcase and control module, when they only needed a control module. BUT... MedicMorgan gets a 4:1 tcase for $250. :) YAY!!!

Here's some notes for Morgan, but thought I'd post them here for all:

The plan (subject to change): open it up and replace the plastic shift fork that comes with the 06 with the shift fork from his existing tcase and make sure all the parts are legit. (Morgan: I can possibly ship you one so you can get the new tcase running without any downtime...). Then swap that sucker with the 2:1 for a super-awesome super-cheap upgrade. :)

Things to look for:

Does the tcase shift manually when out of the car? (Use some channel-lock pliers to turn the shift cam, this is the thing that the encoder motor turns.
Turn the gears at each shift point... you should see a difference between 4 high open (easy to turn), 4 high-lock, neutral and 4-low (hard to turn).

The risk: you're not really buying a 4:1 case, it's another 2:1 case. BUT... it should be verifiable. You could probably ask for the VIN that it came out of and have a dealership friend (maybe Zach can help) validate that it came with a 4:1. I think the VIN magically tells you what it shipped with, am I right folks? But it's a big enough payoff that the risk there is acceptable (imho) and it SAYS it's a 4494. And if the shop is honest they'll probably work with you if you found out it wasn't 4:1. (We can tell from the guts when we pop it open).

Worst case: you sell it for spare parts and recover the $250.

Both Backcountryislife and I have experience with these... he swapped a 4:1 with his 2:1 with no issues, I've rebuilt several with various success on each... so we should be able to help you out. Hopefully we can get it swapped out without downtime-- we'll try to pop open the used one and get it nice before taking your functioning one out. That's the best case scenario.

I don't know how hard "hard to turn" is, but as long as it can be turned, put it in 4 low and turn the input shaft and see how many times the output turns.
