We are trying to assess interest in a joint CA, AZ & NV chapter trail run to be held at a central location. Trail suggestions so far include Sleeping Princess OHV trail off highway 68 near Laughlin NV. This location is roughly 2 hours from Las Vegas, 4 hours from Phoenix, 5 hours from LA and 6 hours from Tucson (sorry Bigunit). This trail is listed as difficult, "This is a nasty, dangerous trail that should be driven with at least two vehicles. ..." There is also an optional loop known as the Bob Miller extension for those who need more of a challenge or prefer a free ride home from AAA . Here is a link to a trip report for additional information :link: . Here is a :link: to the BLM page on Sleeping Princess.

We would run the trail like they did in the trip report, climbing 1,600 ft to the summit in 7.2 miles and turn around and come back down the way we went up and try the Bob Miller Extension. Those who don't want to try the Bob Miller extension or photograph those who do, could continue on 19.8 miles to see a windmill at Basin Well, Burns Spring ruins and waterfall (or the place where water would fall if there were any) and Wayfarer's Inn on a road labeled as easy but dusty and avoid the steep descent.

Since it gets hot in Western Arizona in the summer, we are scheduling this trip for November 3rd, which should provide average high temperatures in the 74F to 88F range. This date is 3 weeks after the October Moab trip and 19 days before Thanksgiving. We would stay overnight in Laughlin Friday night November 2, 2012. Sunrise in Laughlin NV on November 3rd is 7:06 AM (pacific daylight time - PDT) which is also 7:06 AM (Mountain Standard Time - MST) in Arizona and sunset is 5:42 PM PDT (5:42 PM MST) providing only 10 hours and 36 minutes of daylight, so we will meet at mile marker #8 on the North side of highway 68 (GPS 35.196256,-114.433288) at 7:30 Pacific Standard Time (PST) which is 7:30 Mountain Standard Time (MST) to air down and start the trail at 8:00 AM PST (8:00 AM MST), providing 9.5 hours of daylight. For those who choose to stay overnight Saturday night we'll meet for dinner. Sunday we'll do an optional trail run before heading home.

I have made arrangements for a group rate at the Tropicana. Here is how to book using the group rate:

Your attendees can call our Reservation Department to make reservations at (800) 243-6846 seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. Please inform your guests that all rooms must be reserved and guaranteed using your group code: # 17849 prior to the Oct 13, 2013 cut-off date. Each guest will be required to guarantee their room reservation with a credit card, as well as provide a valid credit card at hotel check in. In addition to room and tax, an incidental deposit will be collected at time of check in equaling $30.00 per day with a credit card or $50.00 per day with cash. For additional details see post #70 :link:.

If you post in this thread that you booked at the Tropicana I'll update the attendance list.

Looks good and thank you for doing this homework. I'm sure I'll be in. Doubt I'll do the Extension but the main part looks good.

I will request it off for work...I will give the extension further thought when I see it but if not I will ride along with someone capable.

I'll be reserving judgement on the extension also. Here are a few clips off youtube.

Here is a Tacoma doing the Bob Miller extension of the Sleeping Princes.

It helps to choose a better line

I think this is a run everyone in SoCal, NV and AZ should try to make. Trail looks fun and the group looks great. Looking forward to meeting a few of the forum members that I haven't been able to cross paths with yet.

Sorry to say, but it looks like this run will be too difficult for us... We have been on Hummer Runs in the past, but thislooks too extreme. Sorry, we won't be able to atend. Look forward to seeing the pictures.

The difficult part of the trail is optional. I will not be taking that myself but fully intend on taking the easy run. If nothing else, it is a good time to just hang out and meet others in the club. I hope you reconsider.

betteleal,

I imagine that numerous people/trucks will be taking the bipasses. Do the parts you are comfortable with and take the bipass on the obstacles/trail sections you aren't comfortable with.

we normally do trails with bypasses and then you can have fun watching the others get carnage ;)
