I still think the double cardan was an attempt to solve a problem that (in most cases) didn't exist. I got somewhere around 60,000 miles on mine before it failed. My factory OEM is still solid with over 200,000. I do know that 4Speed researched a lot after his died, and it mostly came down to low quality parts in the Tatton.

I think you are the exception with those miles. I've gone through 3-4 CVs and 2-3 u-joints on the front propshaft.

I dont think the OEM CV is necessarily a weak part, just the rubber seal deteriorates and loses the grease. Keep the grease in and I think you'll be OK. Every 5,000 miles when I rotate tires, part of my maintenance is to clean that boot and then wipe it down well with automatic transmission fluid. My dad had told me long ago that AT fluid was the best rubber preservative you could use. So far, it seems to have worked. Either that, or Alrock is right and it's just luck. That's entirely possible too.

The Tatton had about a quarter of the needles missing and most likely was the cause of the early demise. The remanufactured shaft I bought lasted less than a weekend before the boot tore and spread grease everywhere.

Spicer! Problem solved.
The shop rebuilding the shaft recomneded this. Thoughts?

That’s not the one I use. However I am interested as the cv head I use is not available as an assembled unit. Instead I must buy all the pieces separately and assemble it on the bench. I will look deeper into #923289...might save some time.

Totally confused.
Did your adapter last time on the 3, 4speed. With the Tatton driveline. Nice, some vibration though.
Now Rascole, you've found a better than oem, which is a CV and custom shaft?
The "new" T just took a dump and I don't want to have the vibration (or the six week wait) of the Tatton.
Enlighten me.

Adapter from THOR parts is perfect. Tatton U joints had missing bearings, from factory or from me handling it I don't know. CV is a Spicer part, not a CV like factory, much stronger. No vibrations at all.

Ok. So you're running the same set up, just a shaft from driveshaft pro, instead of Tatton and a Spicer CV.
I thought maybe you had come up with something special from Spicer that would split the difference between stock smoothness and some vibration issues at high speed.
I'm running the former on the 3.
Don't want to do it on the T. Not when it's going to be running 80 in the interstate. (Texas, in case the CHP is watching...)

It is essentially a brand new shaft, they cut off the U joint on the transfer case side and welded on the Spicer part. It is smooth at 80 (down hill). Drive Shaft Pro is the name of the local shop I had do the repairs.
