Ok, while out for a Sunday drive, trail ridin and playin in the mud. No hard stuff. At the end of the day, I started hearin metal on metal w/ every turn of the front driveshalf and it got loud. At first I thought it was my Tcase or front diff. I was deep in the woods, where a truck and trailer would not be able to recover us. To many mud holes to get in or out. So, we limped home and made it. The sound did lessen and made it home, hopin I did destroy either one. Come to find out it was the CVjoint on the rear of the front driveshalf. I was very happy it was only that.
So now, it has to be replaced. Can I only replace the CVjoint and anew Ujoint? Heres some pics...Also, I thought we could remove the front shalf, put in 4hi and be able to drive...Well it didn't work for me?

YEP, available online for about $50-60 Heres some pics...Also, I thought we could remove the front shalf, put in 4hi and be able to drive Yes, you can do that too...Well it didn't work for me? Yes, it will work but you have to shift 4HI LOCK and leave it there

I just had the same happen to my wife's H3 in January.

i replaced mine while installing the rancho lift. the cv joint does not respond well to the change in angle when lowering the front diff for the lift. mainly you see the boot failing first but other times the joint completely goes. your new one should handle the angle ok. It's an easy swap.

Thanks, Rockauto wants $106 plus more for anew Ujoint. Also, we were not able to drive in 4hi locked? The front would only spin. I had to turn off the rig, so I could put it in park. It would not stop spinnin any other way?
I was readin here w/ the lift this is common. Is there a fix for this or a better part replacement?

If you put it in 4hi lock and your front only is spinning you shifter fork is ruined and needs to be replaced. I have had it happen on all of the h3 I have owned.

You have to put it in 4 high lock with the engine off in that situation. Turn ignition to on, put in4 high lock, start truck.

Yup. You should be fine. Sometimes the t-case won't go into lock with zero resistance on the front output. Try the ignition on-off trick. Or next time, put the truck into 4Hi-lock before you pull the driveshaft.

Your CV failure is very common and mud inside the joint will make a tremendous racket. There are several options for upgrading the front shaft CV. to a cardan type. I run an adapter and a Ford 1310 unit on mine. I also ran a 3R cardan for a couple years...no comparison, the 1310 is a much better design and has ZERO vibes at high speeds.

Ok then, Its nice to have options then. I'm unclear right now on either the quick fix so I can still drive or the upgrade and be done w/ it...Bein up here in the mtns and no garage, makes things tougher.
Thanks all, I'll keep you posted
